Has there ever been a Sony platform exclusive Metal Gear Solid game beside MGS3 and its PSP follow-up? As far as I know, MGS1 was released on the PC and eventually remade on the Gamecube, and MGS2 came out on the Xbox as well.Snake Eater/Portable Ops are the only Metal Gear Solid games I can think of that remained exclusive to a Sony console.
I'm not claiming that a port is inevitable, but to claim that it is impossible just seems presumptuous. As for the strength of the Metal Gear Solid brand and its ability to sell consoles? Perhaps we overestimate the mass appeal of the franchise. While Metal Gear Solid has a very dedicated following, did Sonybreak any one-day sales records when MGS3 was launched?
Consider how many more PS2s were in circulation when MGS3 came out compared to the relatively small number of Xboxes when Halo 2 came out. MGS3 has sold about 3.6 million copies worldwide on a 120 million unit console. Halo 2 has sold about8 million copies on a 25 million unit console.
For the sake of argument, let's say that total units sold equals total units in use. If that's so, 3% of PS2 owners purchased MGS3 while 32% of Xbox owners bought Halo 2. MGS2 sold more copies than MGS3, but even at 7 million copies sold, only about 6% of PS2 owners purchased MGS2.
Can Metal Gear Solid really be considered a system-seller, especially considering MGS3sold half as many units than MGS2? Is a franchise really that strong if subsequent games on the same platform actually sell less than their predecessors?
I'm notmaking asubjective judgement on the quality of the Metal Gear Solid series. I enjoy the series.
