ok this problem is driving me NUTS

i have the slim btw, and im trying to transfer save files from my 20G to the 250G

originally i bought a 3rd party data transfer cable which comes with this really tiny disk. it recognizes my hard drive but it read it as a "USB Storage". and then i played around with it and went to the option "customize" and then set the option to 16GB (i dont know if anyone is familiar with this process).

I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS DOING WITH IT.

so ok, it did not DO ANYTHING, im not sure what i have done.

now, recently i got fed up and bought a Micrsoft data transfer cable from GS. problem is, the POS wont detect the external hard drive.

everytime i plug it in with either the 3rd party or the official cable, i hear a sound, like circuits or gears moving inside the hard drive.

with the 3rd party cable, it detects the Hard drive as a USB, but with the official cable, it wont detect the hard drive at all.

so when i plug the cables in, nothing pops up as it should do.

is there anything wrong with the slim or the hard drive itself?

Moral of the story here is - don't mess about with stuff till you know what you're doing rly. Check website of the cable manufacturer - they may have a software update and some idk - instructions. It could be any number of things tbh. It may be that the cable needs to be switched around as it may possibly be a one-way cable (can't see it but still....) Can you set the customisable option thingy to either 20g or 250g? it could be that you're telling it to look for a 16g HDD and it can't find it. Finally, try taking both consoles/HDD's w/e to a game shop - some shops offer a data transfer service for a few notes - they may be able to do it for you in a few minutes. Finally finally - if you can stand to do it, trash old HDD and just recover gamertag on your new machine - you will lose all saves but you at least get to keep your gamerscore.

You don't need the transfer disc with the slim, the software is built in. When you connect the USB end to the slim a pop up will ask if you want transfer to or from the console as the official transfer cable is two way on the 360 slim.

but that message isnt showing up. i just spoke to an xbox rep and she said that the transfer kit is defective, and i should not have bought it from GS but rather from microsoft... omg... geeze ive had the slim for a week now and couldnt play it even for 30 mins because i dont have my save files.

If it is the official Microsoft cable it doesn't matter where you bought it because like posted above the new Slim has the software built it. I'm thinking the 3rd party cable messed something up with your hdd, BUT that's just a guess. Good luck, and I would do what someone else has said and just use a flash drive to copy the stuff off your old hdd using an older 360.

hey man, i have the exact same problem, i dont have a solution but heres the deal ive read everywhere that people have problems transfering content when using the old transfer cables the new ones they came out with are specifically made for the slim, i have not come across anyone using an old one and being succesful..so my guess is the old one **** it up and reads it as a usb ( i also used the old one and it reads it as a 16 gb unit) anyways i went and bought the other transfer cable and it wont read my harddrive at all probably because it is now formatted as a 16 gb usb but when i plug it into my computer it reads it as a 250 gb unit, and it still has all my data on the harddrive, but the thing is i dont know how to format it to read it ive called xbox plenty times trying to figure out how to reformat my harddrive to read it on my computer or to get it back to being read as a harddrive and they keep saying they will escalate the problem and get back to me, its been a week and they keep delaying so as of right now, whoever buys a slim and uses an old transfer cable basically gets f*cked and loses everything... im sorry i dont have much of a solution just wanted to be more clear about what was going on

haha hey dude, i solved my own problem.

i used a 3rd party transfer cable which altered my hard drive and makes it unreadable.

so what i did was use my 3rd party cable and browse/transfer save files to my PC, then transfer those files to a flash drive, and finally transfer them to my hard drive via the flash drive.

Having troubles with mine too (not a slim, just got a 120GB HDD that I want to transfer to). With you guys' issue though, it sounds like the Xbox just formatted it as a USB external drive. When i was looking for a manual option to transfer, it saw my harddrive as a unformatted USB drive. When I went to format it, I noticed that it was only going to format to a 16GB max. So try formatting your drives again as main Xbox drives. Connect the 250GB drive (not connected by the transfer cable) and boot up the Xbox again. Go to System Settings > Console Settings > System Info and write down your serial number Then go to System Settings > Memory and with your Harddrive selected press Y for Device Options choose Format and enter the serial number when prompted. That should reformat your drive as a main Xbox drive. Reboot with the 20GB drive connected now and the 250GB drive on the transfer cable and see if it prompts you (doesn't for me... I think the cable's at fault) Only reason I'm thinking this is you guys' issue is that you keep mentioning that the Xbox sees your drive as 16GB Does anyone know if the older Xboxs updated to NXE should be able to transfer without the disc... or is that just a Xbox slim thing?
