I feel a little shocked by all of this. I haven't heard anyone mention a single band that I listen to besides one guy. Am I the only one besides him who likes older bands like Iron Maiden, Pink floyd, Black Sabbath, and etc? I would have expected them to be pretty popular considering the age of a lot of people on this site. I know that music is pretty old but to me it is great. Do people just not like it and prefer newer bands or have just never listened to it?

Not trying to be mean or anything everyone has a different opinion i'm just curious is all.

[QUOTE="-Snooze-"][QUOTE="Slinky_Turtle"] that makes no sense. how is that ironic?jirca87

Metal is people shouting down a mic, with some other dudes on some instruments. Rap is some dude talking down a mic, to a soundtrack. Very little difference really.

Exactly. I wouldn't really call either music.

Newer metal is screaming and growling into a mic. Classic metal is not. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath ( more with Ronnie James Dio than Ozzie) all featured excellent singing. Bruce Dickinson and the singers of the other mentioned bands are some of the most iconic and talented vocalists of all time.

To me it seems as if you don't even need to be talented to be in most new bands. As long as someone will buy it they'll keep the crap coming.

Metal is people shouting down a mic, with some other dudes on some instruments. Rap is some dude talking down a mic, to a soundtrack. Very little difference really.

Exactly. I wouldn't really call either music.

People like you do not deserve to live.

Metal's lyrics always have subject matter that involves something, usually war, demons, hell, victory, pride, or mystical myths, and I'm sure you'll find that not all metal is screaming, in fact a large percentage of metal is clean singing. Metalcore, Deathcore and Nu-Metal are genres that do not incorporate the term metal, as real metal only involves BM, DM, Power Metal, NWOBHM, Heavy Metal, Doom Metal etc. It's instrumentalism is based on classical music, usually a lot of metal riffs (mostly in BM) are just classical melodies sped up and distorted (see Sacramentum) and metal is by far the most (overall) Melodic genre in the world. If people start providing such examples as Slipknot, BFMV or Converge and saying that they are anything BUT melodic, they are also anything BUT metal.

Hip-Hop (at least, when it's good) is, yes, a dude talking down a mic to a soundtrack. But the rapping is never about random things, it always concerns some sort of subject matter such as the streets, violence, the rapper's personal life, relationships, and this is the vast MAJORITY. There is the poorer minority that does talk about, yes, money and chicks, but that can NOT by any means generalise the whole genre. The soundtracks of good hip-hop always produce well-thought out beats and melodies that flow with the rapping and overall produce a very generally enjoyable experience.

So in truth, you are both very wrong, I'll thank you to judge whether hip-hop and metal are music when you:

-Listen to every hip-hop or metal album ever and provide a well-justified opinion on each based on why you DO NOT like all of them.

-Question yourself and the fibre of your being as to why they are even called MUSIC in the first place!

Christ!

I'm open to all kinds of music and I enjoy many older bands, I own around 2,000 albums digitally, a good 40% of which are pre-80's.

First off people like me do not deserve to do. Rethink that statement for a minute because no one deserves to die for their opinion. Now obviously you haven't listened to much metal if you think its all about war, demons, victory, and the sort. Much of it is about hardships in life and problems in the world. About the wrongs of society and how they should be fixed. Now sure go listen to older metal which was the first of its sort and most of it was, of course, about demons and wars. But as its evolved so has the subject matter of the song. Such as Queensryche's new album. They aren't the heaviest but are still considered old metal. But they're new album is about the war in iraq and the life of a modern day soldier. of the horrors they have to face. they want the whole world to know what these men go through. and don't tell me that i need to listen to every metal album in the world when i listen to every genre of metal and there have been very few metal bands that i dislike. Now rap on the other hand has evolved as well. Yes SOME is about violence and personal life, and relationships. Back when rap first started to rise it was almost ALL about things like that. But now its changed and now that poorer minority as you called it is now the MAJORITY. Now i can't complain about old rap. The rappers were doing what they did for good reason. They weren't out there for the money and to become popular. But that small minority who wanted too is now, like i stated before, the majority. Also there's no need to get angry and use the word Christ. I see this as a friendly argument between us all. No need to get flustered about it.

lol its all good man. I thought it was aimed at me. i just wasn't sure if you were one of those guys who completely despises metal and all it stands for so i was a little angry at first too lol Ugh. Don't even get me started on Slipknot. I have no love for them at all. Not much for Cannibal Corpse either :/ those are two of the main bands that make metal heads all look like lifeless uncaring people. Its a little dissapointing to say the least :/

Christ!

Quest For Fire by Maiden isn't about those things. It's about some cavemen who really want their fire back. Caught Somewhere in Time is about time travel, Deja Vu is about, well, deja vu. Hell, alot of Maiden's songs aren't about those themes you mentioned.

Any game = Miles Davis, Sublime, Mac Dre, John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Scarface, Neil Young or 2Pac.

I enjoy tons of differn kinds of music... Jazz, Blues, Reggae, Hiphop, Rock,etc...

Ive never understood why people hate some music sooo much. I mean sure we all have music we dont care for much, but i wish more peopel had an open mind.

I made the angry first sentence because I was really exasperated...

And believe me, I do listen to a lot of metal, and admittedly I forgot about the 80's thrash and prog such as Metallica, Slayer, and Queensryche, none of which ever write songs concerning "war, demons, victory, and the sort.", and I apologise for that, I posted very early in the morning and the lack of accurate content is not at all based on my knowledge of metal (or lack thereof), because believe me, I know much more about metal than a lot of people here who still think Slipknot is Death Metal or that Cannibal Corpse is the most well-known death metal band. I know A LOT.

P.S. the 'do not deserve to live' was directed towards jirca, not you. His comment was completely stupid.

So I deserve to die because I don't like rap or metal, yet my comment was the stupid one? You might want to rethink that. I know I over-generalized, but I still wouldn't consider most rap music, at least not anything I've heard. To me, singing and/or actual instruments comprise music: simply talking to a beat made with a computer does not comprise music to me.With regards to metal, my definition of it is probably different than yours, and I'm primarily considering just more modern metal. I'll admit I probably haven't heard a large variety of metal, but the majority of what I would consider metal that I have heard is just screaming down the mic.I have heard a couple that actually do sing (and well) though. And I will admit that many of the actual players do have skill, so it was unfair for me to say it wasn't music. Though I still wouldn't consider the vocalists who mostly just scream to be musicians.

With regards to the people who mentioned no one mentioned older music, I listen to Pink Floyd, The Who,and The Rolling Stones while playing occasionally, but a lot of the older music I have doesn't really fit with gaming.

Hmm... Iron Maiden, Metallica, AC/DC, Rhapsody of Fire and Bob Marley. In no particular order.

EDIT: Forgot Guns 'N' Roses... :P

And the games I played while listening to those bands were; TES IV: Oblivion, CoD 4, SC IV, to name a few.

Well, that was until I got the RRoD...

Not trying to be mean or anything everyone has a different opinion i'm just curious is all.

craigalan23

I won't lie to you, I'm a hardcore 60's and 70's fan when it comes to music. My first album was The Dark Side Of The Moon. And well then I got Nevermind... I used to love Grunge. And yeah, I'm pretty bored with all the modern music out today. Rap is just so... In my opinion it does more to degrade the black community than to rise it. Well, I'll leave it at that, I hate rap so much... I know I'll get stoned for this but it's a genre that we could've lived without.

The only reason I've gotten into a few modern day bands is mainly my girlfriend. She's a music yunkie. And she thinks I'm an old man for listening to Abby Road over and over again because I love She Came Into The Bathroom Window.

The only reason I'm so into The Mars Volta is because I'm a hardcore Velvet Underground fan. Noise music is God's almighty melody in my ears. And I love dirty riffs, nonsense lyrics, and noise.
