All true old school gamers like me know for a fact gaming today is a joke compared to what it used to be. All the ones who think its getting better are ones who are either just getting into gaming or are just little kids. However I do think gaming is headed in the right direction but it certainly isn't as great as it used to be. BUT as it seems here most people would rather see better graphics vs better gameplay and thats just pretty sad if you'd ask me...

Snes up to Xbox and PS2 were the greatest days in my gaming career.

Jandrobag

Iv been gaming since the NES days and I think games have been getting better. I still go back and play my old school titles like Ocarina of time and FF7. The fact is that the idea of gaming today bieng a joke compared to to what is use to be is just your opinion, its not a fact, so dont state it like one. Iam a true old school gamer and in my OPINION gaming has been getting better.

The funny thing is I've been gold since launch and pay every month for something I don't use. I just called to cancel it last week and go back to silver but that's like pulling teeth. Matter of fact they just called me to "verify" my info so they can "escalate" it to microsoft's attention. What a pain.

But yeah, I loved Bioshock... A game with NO MULTIPLAYER!!! Not only were the graphics great but it had a great storyline as well!! I kinda wish that they would put out two types of games without having both because one tends to suffer. One version just MP, the other just SP. I'd get my money's worth that way.

nitroracer82

Thats what I've always said. For each different type of game (MP or SP) they can focus on one thing instead of trying to focus on a million things, and make everyone happy which is impossible. If they did do this I think they would have to drop game prices to like 40 - 45 dollars though.

Just because a game has good graphics doesn't automatically mean they sacrifice gameplay. Why is it people assume that you can only have one or the other?

New consoles are more powerful than last gen ones, so we expect the graphics to get better and better. It is one of the first things that will be noticed in any game, and almost certainly compared to other games when it is reviewed.

You don't understand the point of this thread... Game developers are so focused on graphics, physics, A.I. that they just forget about making the game have a good story and gameplay. And because of this games take 5x longer to make and thats another problem right there... There are becoming more less great titles because of the time spent on graphics. Ace Combat 6 for example... can't remember off the top of my head but 1 Jet would take like 4 months to render... thats rediculous imo

call me crazy but i think next gen is ruining SOME franchises.......does anyone else think that developers are trying to hard to implement great visuals instead of what we really care about. the gameplay! (examples, army of two, dark sector)

halo 1-2 were fantastic because they didnt have to worry bout living up to graphical hype. halo 3 in my opinion spent more time on graphics then getting out fun and enjoyable maps, new cool guns, etc. halo 2 was the greatest online game ive ever played. i played it for 2 years straight and id still be playing it if my 360 would let me.

ag3ntz3rox0x

both points in your post are wrong

first army of two isn't a franchise (yet) and it has great gameplay

halo 3's visuals aren't even good compared to some other games, and the gameplay improved a lot of halo 2 ( BUT ITS STILL A HALO GAME, i don't know what people were expecting)

BUT if the point you were trying to make was the length of the single player campaigns is too short, then that i agree with!

Wow... old school consists of FF7 and OoT?! I'm old. On topic though, which I believe this is being asked: "Graphics take up the majority of development time, thus other features in games get cut." I think this is mostly true when looking at current gen offerings, but it depends on the developer and publisher backing the title. I think we have been somewhat spoiled to see massive improvements via graphics over the last few systems and while we still got some improvements this gen, it takes a lot of effort to maintain the same level of improvement 'shock'. Gaming is great now though, and I don't think anything is getting hurt by graphics improvements. There are plenty of titles that focus on things other than graphics that can be pretty darn fun. They won't win the screenshot hype contests, but they are great games never-the-less if you pick them up.

I would like to see some more deep story focussed gameplay compared to graphics though, but that is just my opinion.

Graphics and Gameplay are tied for the number one most important aspects of a game for me. So no - I don't agree with you. While I do think some games need a little more attention to gameplay - I do think Graphics and Visuals should be a primary (if not the primary) focus of developers. The better the graphics - the more immersive the gameplay.

fact is that graphics are getting better, once a few games have set the bar for that level of detail in graphics then other peoples games on the same systems need to put a similar standard of effort to look the part to keep they games looking up to date. graphics are one side and how good a game is to play is another. its not the graphics making some games crud, theys always been crud games out among great games even when the graphics were first in 3d and even when 2d graphics were the norm and they were no systems that could knock out the level of detail they can now. the games usually suck because they are rubish games, just now graphics have improoved so when you get rubbish games they still got decent graphics because thats the standard of graphics they need to use if the system is capable if they want to charge people full price for a game. as graphics do help sell games as well as good gameplay rep the game has, the aims to have both and sell loads wii graphics arnt all that because most of the games are just ports from other older systems, and also coz its not able to knock out proper hdtv resoloutions, if it was im sure alot of the games would bump the graphics right up and still keep the same level gameplay they would of had before

i agree also some are too short but thats probally down to the balance of how they percieve most people are going to play the game. as them sort of shooters have gotten shorter theys no denying the multiplayer usage of these games has gone thru the roof.

IMO this is the order in which a game should be rated: (from most to least important)

Graphics > Gameplay > Controls > Replayability (Off and on line) > Sound > everything else.

Games with bad graphics just seem unfullfilling, and the worst ones can even cause headaches.
