I think it's a stupid idea. It's bad enough having to listen to the 13 year olds and now I get to listen to *beep* every five seconds. It might even be enogh for me to unplug my mic and forget about xbl entirely.
I still think there should be an option to turn it on / off. It's stupid for grown adults to have to deal with censorship. Besides, it's not going to be hard to find a way around it. For instance, just say "Lammet" or "duck" or "twitch" the possibilites are endless.
All and all, this new feature is going to be an epic fail.
I'm freakin happy with everything they've done in regards to XBL so I am sure, if they did this, then it would be done right... eventually! I think it is a good thing though... I know I let the F-bombs go sometimes when I am playing Halo and then I think that there could be kids playing... not having to worry would be a bonus.
The ones that are constantly swearing or being annoying get muted by me but it'll be good to just have their swearing muted out while I am getting around to muting them fully
While I feel that it is a good thing for those who don't want to hear such language while playing a game, I don't think that it should be mandated to all games. Make it a choice to turn it on or off. Bad language is free speech after all , and while I may not like it; I will defend the right to say it.
[QUOTE="andyrae11"]It's new news to me. I think it's a good thing. How about some good sportsmanship for once?JustWiicredibleNah.
LMAO i second that...trashtalking makes online gaming so much better...@least in COD4 which is the only game i play online rite now...i mean come on, its rated M and there's cursing in it like when ur a marine and u lose sometimes it says, "Damn, we jus got our a$$es kicked"...if its in the game how can they censor us from using language like that online for rated M games...like i said b4 rated E games is understandable for censoring foul language but not M games

I agree completely. I also just thought. I would laugh hysterically if wrong things get censored. Like someone says something close to the word A$% like Class, and it gets beeped. I can see it now, "Well, fellas' I'd love to play another round but I have to go to *BEEP*
It is definitely a breach on freedom of speech. If we are allowed to use profanity in public, then we should be allowed to the same thing on line, which is sort of a virtual public ground. However, i do see how their could be an issue with young xbox live players.J_Kramer
younger players shouldn't be playing games like halo 3.
Are you serious? How do they know when some one is going to swear?NintendoGamer3
It recognizes speech and i guess they would program it to bleep out certain words.
good thing, as it's to protect minors it would only apply to child accounts. You wouldn't swear in the presence of anyone younger than 14 deliberately, so why shoudn't this thing be made.
I really like this, as MS will make yet another anti-videogaming argument redundant. My only issue would be the age they block expletives at, it shouldn't be under 18 or anything like that. Maybe under 15.
As long as you have the option of turning it on or off, it can be a good thing. As for protecting younger players, that is a load of rubbish, if you want to proetect younger players, educate the parents on using parental controls and monitor what they are playing, like parents should do. EnigmaticBeauty
Totally agree
So we can kill each other, blow heads off, chainsaw people in half, do executions, but......don't curse. That thinking is what has made America a joke.
.
It's good when you're dealing with younger players but personally I couldn't care less.. I don't mind hearing a few naughty words, I'm old enough to handle it lol.
I think there should be a switch like a lot of you said. That way whoever hosts the game can specifically say the game is filtered or unfiltered and whoever takes offense can just leave the lobby before going into the matchup. That'd be a good alternative as opposed to just forcing everyone to play nice.
lol if you think they can even begin to have a way to censor swearing like that in real time.Gen007
We can Fly, we can go to space, we can talk to people 1000 of miles away. You really think it's impossible?

yup if they could i would consider a bigger accomplishment then all of those things. It would be that amazing it would make going into space look like childs play.
well heres the deal. You would have to have an entirely other program that moniters each word said therefore there would have to be some kinda of delay on the mic so that it can be processed. Im not sure what this would do for quailty of gameplay, it would definatly make it less entertaining and there would be more overhead on the game running so possilbe even cause lag in the microphones or games.
The possibility of microsoft even considering doing this is very slim. Because theres a chance they would lose many paying customers. If they do it, it should absolutly be a parental mode thing.
They wouldn't just censor the entire xbox live community because parents are mad. If your mad your sons hear it then dont let them play the game.
Injurenoodle brings up a good point too. So kids can watch head being ripped off, chainsaws, people being killed on sight. But swearings an issue?
not cool...not cool at all. i dont care if they put this filter in other zones, but in the underground zone i dont expect or want to be censored. my friends and i joke around a lot, and in doing so, we swear quite frequently. makchady
Your sig is awesome...i might be the only person on gamespot that knows what movie its from.
there r clearly groupings for a reason. Family should have the censor. Pro shouldnt. Recriation should have some bad words censored but Underground should definitaly not have anything to do with this news. it clearly discribes in the discription that anything goes.
im just saying how would it be implemented i can think of a few that wont be happening.
text is a diff story its not real time and MS can easily look up some ones profile and delete the stuff that's easy.how would they moniter millions of people voices in real time?
Now the only way i could see it being done is like this they release an update that installs software to monitor your voice+ other peoples coices and censor swearing but theres already a problem the 360 dosent have enough internal mem for that no . No way in hell with the new update coming. It would also use up system resources which would of course mess up you games. Even if they could get something up and running voice reconnection programs suk everyone knows this the program probably wouldnt pick upthe curse words most times. Def now way when you have ten people in a game room talking.
Well it is about "bleep" time, as I am "bleep" tired of the god"bleep" whiny kids that never shut the "bleep" up and curse all the "bleep" time. Atleast this will "bleep" help.
:P
I really think that this is a great idea, as listening to some people makes it so I do not care to play online most of the time as it ruins the experience.

Well with text you type something in and when you push enter it comes up with ****. I think it would be similar as i know their is a little delay from when your saying something in to the mic til people on the other side hear it. So it would be just like text where after you say it to the time people hear it, it wouldv'e been bleeped out. Also look at the Endwar voice system it seems pretty good but of course it wont be perfect, and their will be ways around it. I think it's a great thing to add to parental controls.

There is no breach to your freedom of speech. If it was the goverment who controlled xbox live then yes, you could make that argument, but since its not its not, there is no law saying they cant prohibit what you say. If they wanted to they could filter any word they wanted to

I am glad to see that someone here understands their Constitutional rights. People toss "Freedom of Speech" around without actually knowing what it means and how it applies to their daily lives.People will just fine new & colorful euphemisms to get around it that will ultimately be just as offensive as the words they've already blotted out. Ironically, the only complaint I ever got for my online gamertag is Trashtalk 100%.
