if you wanted a thief class you should have chosen wood elf. and your character shouldnt be very powerful, if its a thief its a thief. play the game like a thief, it should be easier.

to level you do mundane tasks (like killing creatures with a specific weapon, or walking everywhere you go for athletics) and you can level up every time you level up with these mini levels 10 times. it probably sounds confusing, the way i wrote it, but just keep doing thing related to the main skills of your character class. warriors have heavy armor as a main, so alsways opt for heavy armor. and only use swords and blunt weapons, unless you want to master only one. when you see a blue icon that tells you to level up, go to an inn, a camp, or your house and sleep for an hour. when you wake up you get the option to choose what stats you want to improve.

Im completely obsessed with Oblivion, Ive been playing this game ever since it came out way back when.

I know 2 powerful charachters that you can make that will rip and tear through any and all enemies. A good stealthy charachter would be: Bosmer, with: Light Armor, Sneak, Marksman,Illusion,Mysticism (detect life to easily pick out targets in dark places, reflect can help loads if your ever caught out), Acrobatics (has been condemned loads, but as a stealth marksman your going to need all the moblity you can get), this leaves you with a seventh optional skill, personally I usualy go for mercantile cause money ftw.Birthsign should be mage. A good battlemage charachter would be a dunmer/imperial with: Blade/Blunt (NOT BOTH), Block (can be very good when you reach a high level for it), Restoration, Destruction, Heavy Armor, Athletics(that heavy armor is bloody heavy, itll slow you down to a crawl if you dont have a high athletics) and armorer.Birthsign should be Mage.

You should NEVER choose Acrobatics, Or Athletics For any major skill. This will make you're character level way to fast, and thus make you unprepared for the leveling. Since I am An expert at the game with MAXED attributes, Trust me when I say No Acrobatics Or Athletics! Choose the skills that are hard to Level up. You will get more mileage out of the game. When I level up, I have beautiful 5 attribute modifier to JUST the attributes that I wanted to level, so nothing is wasted.

Your character has major skills and minor skills. To level up you have to increase a major skill level 10 times. It doesn't have to be the same skill, but it can be. As for the first gate, I did it at level 1, I just used a health restore spell and saved every 30 seconds.

I started the game when it first came out, with an Orc Warrior, with a heavy emphasis on weaponry and armor. I found myself never having enough healing potions, and using very light healing magic spells with very little effect due to the dumb nature of the orc.

I was thinking of restarting with a Paladin type character. Has anyone else had problems finding enough healing items? or money to buy them?

The gate gets harder as you level up. So, at level 1 you're fighting level 1 enemies. At level 2, you get the idea. I played through the game with a stealth/ranged character and it went really well. My roommate played through as an orc warrior and had a slightly harder time than I did, but still made it through. You guys should both be fine.

I've played through the game twice and have had the most luck with a redguard which i made a custom class to be heavy on blade skills and useful magic skills (like restoration and destruction). If you make restoration one of your major skills, you will more quickly be able to cast higher level restore spells, which will give you more bang for your buck in terms of how much benefit you get from a healing spell. Without having had restoration as a major skill, I found that even though I used it all the time, it leveled realllly slow. I read somewhere it's the hardest skill to lvl in the game.

It just takes time in Oblivion

That and make certain that you play your character to what you have made. Example: Don't run in with your sword swinging if your character is more suited to stealth and entrapment.
