Some gamers think its O.K to buy a xbox 360 game for 60$ and trade it in for 15$? That loses 45$!I think its pretty dumb to do that unless you realy hate the game, or need the money. So if you still do need the money and you trade it in why did you pay so much for it just to return it and get less than what you paid for. Old news, we gamers lose money!halo3fan18
I agree. That's why I've never traded in a game. If I have a game I want to get rid of, I put it on ebay. You'll always get more money there than you will at your local Gamestop or EB. Used games are a huge business for the retailers...notice how they always ask you if you have anything to trade in when you step through the door? They make much more money off of used games than they'll ever make off of new games. Hell, if it weren't for used games they probably wouldn't even be in business.
Your right, this is old news... but if you beat the game, and the game has little or no replay value, why keep it? trading it in is probably the worst way of doing this. I try to sell my games on ebay or craigslist first.
believe it or not but gamestop is in the business of MAKING MONEY they dont force you to trade their games in, but its the easiest way. thats why so many people do it. they are not in the business of trading video games and giving you a fair price.
As mentioned before: This is the economy - gamers 'n all.
But what would you rather? Have a game remain untouched forever gathering dust on a shelf, or put that $15 or so towards another game? I used to be fully against trade-ins, but now I realise keeping them isn't a good idea (for me, at least).
I see the point of view that you are getting ripped off, but I look at it like this. If i'm done with a game and it is just going to sit there and collect dust I might as well trade it in. Plus where I go which is gamecrazy they give a great amount for trade ins so it is very often that I get a brand new game for free due to the trade ins. Also what I have been doing lately is trading in a game when I beat it and then just buy another used game so I'm not getting ripped off as bad. Ebay makes a lot of sense but i'm so busy with work I just find it easier to go to a store and trade it in.LilSlugger1
Exactly, it's all about convenience. Usually when I sell a game on ebay, I have to wait a week or two before I get my money. And even then I'll generally receive only a few dollars more than if I traded in at the store. It's easier to get the store credit and put it toward another game.

And the bolded is the dam truth. Its the business of ripping people off. This is why you go on sites like ebay where you get rid of the middle man(the retailer) so you get much more.

You do realize that ebay is also a retailer in the sense that it is providing a service that does come at a price.
Ebay while it may be a way to get a little more than the $15 offered by Gamestop is still not a very viable solution. Ebay and their various fees, Paypal fees, the time it takes to ship an item, accept paypal payments, deal with customers who do not pay, all lead to lost time and as they say time is money.
Bottom line is that no matter what you do you will lose money in some way, whether it be the gas it takes to drive to the local shipping store, or the fees that pile up when selling things online...or the loss you take when selling a game back to a retailer that needs to make a profit in order to stay in business.
Its your choice and I dont think a decision like this one can be deemed ignorant because it does not involve your money or time. Its up to each individual to decide what makes most sense to them, not what makes the most sense to you.
I'm not big on trading in games but just recently I took 3 games that I don't touch anymore (Gears of War and Oblivion) or just hate (Guitar Hero 3) so that I could get GTA IV for cheaper. While yes, getting 15 dollars for a 60 dollar game does suck, but most stuff depreciates (houses are an exception). I also figure that I got my money's worth with Gears and Oblivion while I do feel I got ripped off with GH3.
However 15 dollars is more money than it just sitting on the shelf collecting dust - it's a double-edged sword. I wouldn't make a habit of it though
Gamers do not lose money. What would you do if there was not a place to sell your games? Would you complain about not getting any money for your old games? Most likely not.
What about the fact that you can buy used games that work just like new for cheaper. You are not losing money as if you could not sell your game you would not get any money for your games as it is.
If you buy a game for $60 and beat it and don't want to play it any more so you sell it to them for $15 you have actually only paid $45 for the game. So in the long run you are saving money this way.
You are not losing money, gamestop is gaining money. You can't lose what you have already spent.

Exactly. Ebay is the way to go whether you buy or sell games. Video games on Ebay are cheap and you can sell your games for a lot more money than your local gamestore. Personally, I dont trade or sell my games. I prefer to keep them and grow my collection. That's just me though.
WHAT IS CRAIGSLIST???halo3fan18
go to craigslist.com and see
It is a "local" sales web page - similar to ebay but no auctioning - just online classified adds service for your local area. I think it is only in the U.S. though and I'm thinking if you haven't heard of Craigs List - you may be outside the U.S. as craigs list is just about as popular Ebay anymore (from a user standpoint - not talking dollar value).
This is what happens in real life, not just with games. Your car will never be worth the same amount of money once you drive it off the lot, its how the economy works in a sense. Everyone loses money, not just gamers.bulletproofcow
not true your dad or grandfather who drove away with that 1969 camaro ss and kept it in mint condition is sitting on a gold mine...

True - but it DID in fact depreciate for a whole lot of years first - in fact when I was in High School you could get '69 Camaros for $500 and SS's for $1000-$1500 and that wasn't all that long ago (ok maybe just a couple years) - it's the same with games and everything else pretty much everything will hit "classic" status eventually and then instead of depreciating it will start to appreciate again - but official classic status takes 20 years at a minnimum. Do you want to hold onto your 360 games for 20+ years - if so then you will be able to sell them as collectors items.
So yes - there are (RARE) exceptions to every rule - but in general everything depreciates once you buy it. (Except a house as someone pointed out)
Im a gamer, I dont sell my games, even if I dont play it anymore. you got to admit every game has its replay value.Ligh_warrior
Some games though aren't even worth the purchase the first time around. Games like Bullet Witch and Vampire Rain come immediately to mind - I couldn't play those games for more than a half an hour let alone "replay" them - so some games just have to go and ya chalk the price ya paid up to a loss in bad experimentation.

well yeah, I heard those games got a real bad score, so i didnt buy them. I do my research before buying games  if you look at my games, I can gurantee you I still have everyone of those the games in my list. its pointless to buy something for 60$ wait around 3 months or so and sell it again for half of the price.

Yup, I never trade in games either. Its just a big rip off.
Not every game you trade in is worth $15. It depends on a couple of things, like when was the game released... Newer games will get you more money, what condition is the game in, and if you want money for it or in-store credit that can lower or raise the games value, and if there is any special deals going on that can also affect how much you get.
