I have a friend who is a crazed-collector of JRPGs for Xbox 360, so I was able to play Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and Star Ocean 4 at his place. Yikes. Quality has really gone down-hill in recent years. What is Square thinking releasing this grabage in half-finished form? What happened to the high quality of games we have come to expect in recent years? Star Ocean 4 was the only one that seemed half-decent, so much so that I decided to buy it myself and have enjoyed it ever-since.

All I can say is this: I really hope Square pulls out all the stops for FFXIII. Seriously. They need to regain their reputation after such terrible releases. Does anyone agree with my view on Star Ocean 4, or think that one of the other games was better in comparison? I'm curious to know.

P.S. I've heard that Eternal Sonata was very good, and intend to hunt down a copy and try it myself.

Star Ocean was a pretty good game. My complaints are the game took way too long to get good for me at least it felt dull until the second disc, some areas lasted way too long, Edge got way too emotional too fast and stayed that way for too long, and horrible voice acting (Lymle sounded like she was slow and the girl in purple had to be the most annoying person ever). Though I still enjoyed it a lot because a few of the characters were good, the voices got more bearable as time went on besides the girl in purple, great combat system that made me want to level grind for no reason, the coliseum was a lot of fun, great boss battles, and etc.

Overall the pros were better than the cons but I thought Lost Odyssey and Tales of vesperia were better in my opinion at least.

I played Blue Dragon. And I kinda liked it. It had good controls butt Star Ocean (orwhateveritscalled) Is defiantly the best JRPG for XBOX. It doesn't beat TWEWY.

I think Lost Odyssey and The Last Remnant are amazing. I only played a little bit of Blue Dragon and I thought it was good enough for $12. Inifinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean: The Last Hope look good too. The only game I don't think looks all that great is Tales of Versperia. I played the demo and thought it wasn't very good.

The demo is terrible but the full game is outstanding. You should get the game.

There are tons:

Infinite Undiscovery is exceptional if you get past the opening sequence. (traditionally the opening sequence has been weak on jrpgs.)

Some people like vesperia, I hate it.

Lost Odyssey is pure old school RPG joy, the dreams are exceptional.

Star Ocean 4 is a real fun achievement, if you like Star Ocean 2 you'll love it, if you want a follow up to Til The End Of Time, you'll be dissapointed.

Blue Dragon is HEAVILY underrated.

Enchanted Arms is forgottable, but servicable.

Spectral Force 3 is average, but the combat is fantastic *if you like SRPG

There are more, I'm just tired.

Only JRPG's I've played on 360 so far are Eternal Sonata and Lost Odyssey. I don't think either are very good. Eternal Sonata was terrible. The only good thing about that game was the graphics IMO. Everything else was bad, and yes that does include the battle system. Lost Odyssey is much, much better than ES but that's no major achievement. My favorite JRPG is FFX. That was released early in the PS2's life. LO feels like it was released about 10 years before FFX. Very, very outdated.

Tales of Vesperia is an amazing game, and Eternal Sonata is quite good as well. Those are the two best JRPGs on the 360 for me. They are actually really good though. They are legitimately good, not just comparatively good to the other games.

Tales of Vesperia was great.

I heard good things about Eternal Sonata and will probably get that eventually.

Lost Odyssey was good and reminiscent of old school JRPGS.

Infinite Undiscovery felt like it was too rushed. If it was fine tuned and the story properly developed, it could of been great.

I could not even finish The Last Remnant. It bored me to death. I was not a fan of the battle system either.

I shyed away from Blue Dragon because of its reviews, but I'll pick it up for cheap later down the road.

Oh and I'll pick up Star Ocean 4 eventually as well because I enjoy Tri-Ace, but after SO3 and the recent review of SO4, I'll wait for the price to drop.

The best JRPG I've played in the past 10-15 years is hands down Tales of Vesperia. A true diamond in the ruff. It is pretty damned amazing. One of the only RPGs I've ever been able to play through more than once. It's really that good.

Have you tried Tales of Vesperia? If not, you're missing out (it's a lot better than anything else out there for the 360). As for other JRPGs that are good...none, really. Star Ocean is probably the closest to ToV, but still falls.

its because Square Enix has basically ALWAYS sucked at making good RPG's. Infinite Undiscovery, is probably one of the worse games I've ever played =\. I thought it would be alot better because "starocean till the end of time" for the PS2 was half decent. But yea, then they seemingly tried way too hard to create a good game, and they couldn't. Plus alot of people tend to compare Square Enix's games with Final Fantasy, which is an unbeatable RPG franchise.

Although, I don't mind an RPG if you can like...totally 100% customize your character, (Fable 2, Fallout 3, Oblivion, etc.)

Last Remnant is actually quite good, I hated it at first because it was very poorly explained and the texture pop-in is HORRENDOUS but once you get past that and work out what you're actually supposed to be doing then its quite addictive :D

Eternal Sonata is also awesome, even though it's a bit too 'nice' at times.

What I've played of Lost Odyssey (my bf has currently stolen it lol) seemed good too, if a little depressing :P

As for Blue Dragon... well I think the less we say about that the better. Let's just sweep it under the rug and pretend it never happened, ok? lol

I get the feeling that you probably didn't spend more than 10-15 minutes on each of those games, in which case you can't really get a proper feel for the game. Lost Odyssey is actually a very good game, it's made by a number of former final fantasy developers, and it has a lot in common with that series. Also, Operation Darkness is a very underrated game, but it doesn't really get good until about the fourth mission so a lot of people dismissed it before really sinking their teeth into.

I'd just like to point out that SquareEnix did not release Lost Odyssey. It was Developed by Mistwalker and Produced by Microsoft Game Studios. For being a "crazed-collector of JRPGs" your friend really is missing the boat on the 360.

He doesn't have the best JRPG for the 360, Tales of Vesperia. Also Eternal Sonata was a decent game. I wouldn't call it "very good". So far this is how I'd rate the JRPG's on the 360:

Tales of Vesperia - 8.9

Lost Odyssey - 8.4

Star Ocean 4 - 8.0

Blue Dragon - 7.8

Infinite Undiscovery - 7.5

The Last Remnant - 7.5

Eternal Sonata - 7.0

I haven't beaten any other JRPG's for the 360 but I only think there's 1 other one anyway. Please keep in mind that these are just my opinions. Although they're based on roughly 20 years of playing JRPG's. Point is however that the 360 has well more than "only one good JRPG so far".

No it doesn't have a JRPG that was as revolutionary has FF7, but those games are very rare anyway. The 360 currently (and I can't see this changing) has the best JRPG line up of ANY next gen system BY FAR.

I love Lost Odyssey and i'm enjoying Tales of Vesperia. Eternal Sonata was 100% blow though. The characters are cute and I think that the cinematography on the in-engine cutscenes is really good and I wish Vesperia would spice up their stuff with all the close ups and angles that they had, but outside of that I didn't like the game.

yeah JRPG's aren't the 360's strong points. not one AAA caliber JRPG this gen on current gen consoles. in fact, the most recent AAA JRPG i can think of was that persona game for PS2.

Give Fable, Mass Effect, and other stuff. I used to be a large JRPG fan myself, now I enjoy a wide variety of RPGs. To me, an RPG is an RPG, and each genre has their own quirks and unique "genes" that make them fun.

Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata are great. Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon are too. Give them a chance, not a brief demo at a friend's house.
