I'd like to buy an RF switch to exchange viewing and sound between my PC and xbox when want to, but I am incompetent when it comes to hardware.

I was told I needed to do is to plug the switch cable into the RF port on my graphics card in order to get both speaker sound and display. Does the NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GS have such a port?

I have that setup, PC-Monitor with DVI, 360 with VGA. For sound I just spliced a few Y-Adaptors and have both running to the same inputs. Loose some some sound quality over a straight hookup, but only noticeable if you compare.

Excellent for you, but I did not understand any of that.

My main concern is, once I plug everything in, what hardware do I need to switch between PC and xbox instead of unplugging/replugging the wires every time.

If you are hooking it up to an LCD monitor, then most likely it will have two inputs on the back, a white DVI port, and a blue VGA port. Your computer with have both as well. The Just plug the Xbox VGA adaptor into the blue port, and your computer into the white port.

As far as Audio, the 360 VGA adaptor has both optical and 2xRCA as options, Optical is normally used for full systems, like you have for a Home Entertainment System, the 2xRCA are what your prob gonna be using to hook it up to the computer sound system. All you need is a 2xRCA - Stereo 1/8" (3.5mm) adaptor, and then a 2x Stereo 1/8 - 1x Stereo 1/8 Adaptor. On the second adaptor, plug your 360 audio cables, and PC audio cables into the dual end, and the single end into your sound system. Easy Peasy.

EDIT: This is how nice I am, I even made you a crappy Paint diagram.

EDIT 2:Oh and if you hook it up as above, no wire switching, just have to press the "Souce" button on the display to switch between.

Also, the 2x RCA - 1x Stereo 1/8" comes with the 360 VGA adaptor.

Fantastic! Thank you. I have a final favor to ask: could you link me to picture of those adapters?

I work in mm rather than inches, so 1/8" socket is the same as a 3.5mm socket.

The 2 x RCA to 1 x 3.5mm adaptor is provided with the VGA cable. The RCA end of it looks just like the holes in the back of a TV you would plug your component cable into.

Then you need an adaptor to allow 2 x 3.5mm stereo plugs to plug into a single 3.5mm socket, so you need one of these:

Will this work considering my speakers plug into a subwoofer?

What I have: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Altec-Lansing-MX5021/dp/B0000C2KB7/ref=sr_1_36?ie=UTF8&s=gateway&qid=1202564857&sr=8-36

In a 2.1 system the 2 represents the 2 speakers that will go either side of your monitor, and the .1 is the subwoofer. You don't want to just use the 2 speakers if you can use the subwoofer as well, and also depending on how they are linked up, it may not be possible to use just the two speakers.

Since I don't have those speakers to look at and see how they connect to your computer I am going to have to assume that you have a cable going from your PC to the subwoofer, then more cables from the subwoofer to the individual speakers that give left and right sound? Hope so :)

If you have a single cable (possibly with green plastic ends) that goes between your PC and subwoofer you can plug the 2 stereo to 1 stereo adaptor mentioned before, into the back of the subwoofer input. You then plug your PC into this adaptor. Then to hook up your 360 to the speakers connect the 2RCA to stereo adaptor from your 360 into the adaptor in the back of the subwoofer. that should in theory allow both devices to provide input to the speakers.

If you have more than one cable going from the PC to the speakers (more common on 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setups) then I think you will have to pick which set of speakers you want it to come out of.

I have a single green cable linking the PC and subwoofer, as you said. Hopefully it will work out.
