Does anyone have a power brick that makes a really high pitched noise - especially noticeable when the xbox 360 is off (but connected to a power supply that is on)? Doesnt sound right!

make sure your cables are plugged in all the way, it could be the power trying to make the connection but cant.

does it last for like a 1/4 of a second, like a fan getting quicker then slowing to a stop? if it is, its becasue your "force it off". if you hold down the powwer button on the 360, rearther then just pressing it, for some reason it does that.

Curious to know if you ever got this sorted out. I'm having the exact same problem and MS is no help.

Same here! I bought a new 360 a week ago and was very pleased it wasn't as loud as the old one. But now my brick went wild and became about twice as loud as my old noisy 360 itself ever was. The fans in there sound like they're old, dirty and rusty. WTF?!?akayima
Good job with bringing an old topic back from the other side.

That is really worrying, I'd check your cables are connected properly.

If that doesn't work I'd by a new one, That could be very dangerous.

There could be a capacitor going out in the power brick. The only way to fix it without having extensive (and I mean EXTENSIVE) knowledge in electronic circuitry is to get a new one. That will fix your problem:)

Yeah mine does that too. When it's off you here a constant high-pitched noise. It's kinda annoying so I might buy another one. I wonder if it's covered under warranty.

I'm not sure how to stop it! i really dont wanna go thru the hassle of trying to get a new one too. ill see how annoying/ dangerous it is. if my house burns down ill let the forum know i guess heh

cause cause its a ridiculous problem! im not sure if its my problem or if its a normal

I have 2 different power supplies, one is from the older xbox which has a ground for the wall outlet, as well as a ground going into the power supply, the new one that came with the xbox doesnt.. could it possibly be that the new one makes the noise because of the lack of the ground? this is just knowledge im trying to pull from my knowing of guitars and how they make static hum if they arent grounded correctly

alot of electronic devices put out high frequency noises occasionally. you rarely notice it, but theres a light in my kitchen that does this all the time, as well as an older tv. i cant explain it, but it isn't just you.

My power brick does make an annoyingly high-pitched noise, but only when my Xbox is turned on, and I wouldn't really call mine a "high-pitched" noise; it's more loud and whiny for me. Lucky for me, I'm getting a new Xbox for Christmas, which supposedly has a smaller, more efficient power brick than the older models (mine's a 2006). But yeah just get a new power brick.

I had the same powerbrick problem, and called support right away when I got my Xbox (about a year and a half ago). The lady on the phone replied, Does the system work??? .... "yes" ..... well then there's no problem is there? Have a nice day.... Now my 360 just died starting with the system freezing 3 minutes into game, then an E74 error, now 3 red rings flashing. Maybe someday it will work properly.

This happened to me once the other night. I turned my 360 elite off and it made a high pitched squealing noise for about 15-30 seconds after which it stopped and it hasn't occurred since. But since then I noticed that my power supply does make a high pitched low volume squealing noise while it is on.

I'm going to bring this thread back from the dead yet again, since it's the first link that pops up on Google when someone does a search for "xbox 360 power supply noise". The noise in the 360's power supply is actually a tiny little cooling fan. If you look closely at the supply, you'll notice it has cooling vents on both sides. While it's running, hold your hand by the vents and you'll feel air rushing into one side and out the other. It's a very small fan, so we're talking a small amount of air flow, but the fan sure makes a lot of noise.

This fan runs any time there is any power drawn from the power supply. After you turn off your 360, if you leave your controllers plugged in it will continue to charge those. That'll keep the power supply fan going. If you unplug your controllers, you'll notice the noise shuts off immediately. The little fan will also shut off automatically once the controllers are done charging.
