Lay it horizontally, safe, better cooling and it make it easier for the 360 to read the disk. I also make sure its got room in the back to breathe.

I usually have it vertical but sometimes I have it horizontal. I don't think it really matters to tell you the truth, it just mainly matters however you want to put it.

Well Xbox Support says to place it vertically, that way both of the sides are exposed.

I always have mine horizontal for the same reasons as zaku101 mentioned. Having the console vertical leaves in venerable. A slight knock could scratch the disc or even send the 360 tumbling.

I would lay it horizontally if I was you.

Best way I have found is to use horizontal BUT have it propped up off your table. The bottom of your 360 will cook if you don't give it some space to breathe. I've found my 360 to be MUCH cooler doing i this way.

I always have mine horizontal, but if you have a safe place for the system with enough room that it can still get some air, then feel free to go vertical.

horizontal is the way to go! look at the vents on the xbox. If you put it vertical, it covers the largest vent.

I have mine horizontal on a laptop cooler (which is plugged into a nearby computer so it doesn't draw its power from the xbox)

The air blowing out the back doesn't even feel warm anymore...

After talking to an GameStop rep, he told me laying it flat is the safest way to go, he says putting it vertical is asking for trouble and they get many people with issues when it's placed vertical. But mine is placed vertical anyways because I play my games from the hard drive so the disk really doesn't spin and no worries about bumping the table or anything. I like sitting it up, it looks much better that way. But every man his own I suppose.

It doesn't matter what way you lay it.

It was designed to be stored either vertically or horizontally so it makes no difference whatsoever. Mine is stored vertical, next to my TV. That way it gets plenty of air. The console barely gets warm never mind hot. Unless your a very clumsy person your not going to knock over a vertical 360. You know where it's stored so that means you know where to be careful around it.
