question regarding xbox live sign up

When I was signing up for Xbox live they made me enter my parents live id even though I stated that I was over eighteen ? how can I overide it? do they already know from my email adrress that I'm under 18?

The procedure is entirely determined by the age on your windows live ID. Once you reach 18 you are able to upgrade from the child membership.
