I have that other console, and I'm wondering if I should get a 360, the thing holding me back is that I keep hearing numerous people having to send theirs back about 6 months after they get it... the ring of death, is this true?

I don't think that happens anymore. The first shipments of consoles had some problems, but it should be gone now.

Never had a problem ... just follow the rules, let it breathe and buy it flowers once in while to keep it sweet!

Well I got mine when it first came out and have never had a problem with mine (fingers crossed). So I don't think you should worry too much about it.

keeping it well ventilated is the key.  But you will have problems with alot of electronics if it isn't able to be well vented. I was a big supporter of "other" systems but I am very happy with my 360. (Although I do have problems with the EA sports titles, so I would advise staying away from them)

It's called the silent minority. How many time have you gone onto a message board to post "Everything works fine." but if you have a problem no one thanks twice about posting.

Ive had mine fist wave at launch last year no problems! the only place where this problem seems to be prominent is Gamespot! a while back ago I started to get suspicious so I clicked on one of the "well I got the ring of death today" people only to confirm what I suspected! All of his games were PS3 titles and he belonged to PS3 unions! Ive caught an alarming amount of people doing the same thing, Its unfortunate that we have so many Immature people here, but there are a hell of allot of trolls that just like to cause trouble!

That`s a rare thing now. I`ve left mine on for well over 48 hours during Christmas break and I had no hiccups at all. You should be fine now.

The problem was mostly with the earlier models. Back when it first came out, I finally got mine two days before Xmas in 2005. On Xmas day, I got the red lights! So, yeah, my Xmas was ruined. But when they sent me a new one, everything was okay. I haven't had any problems with mine yet. and its been over a year now. It definitely pays to keep it in a well vented area. If you want to get one and you like the games, then just get one. Just take care of it and it should be fine. All electronic equipment has the possibility to conk out on you, so if you're really that worried about it, just pay for the extended warranty from Microsot. Don't let something like that keep you from good gaming. If we all did that, then no one would have bought millions of PS2s

I'm up to number 4 here, mine seem to die in about 3 months.  The oldest one wasn't in the first batch and the newest dead one was made this year!

I have had 4 in 12 months and I keep mine well ventilated, but I think I am just unlucky because my bro hasn't had any trouble with his.

If you treat the 360 well, it will return the favor :)

As long as you treat it well. We've had a lot of returns where I work from people using it while it's on the carpet (?!), or it gets treated as a toy. It needs to be treated more like a PC and you'll be fine.

Im on my 7th with the last 6 including my launch console dieing on me. The problem was not only the first wave of consoles but also the supposed refurbished console not being so refurbished. If your launch console died 9 out of 10 times they were sending out refurbs. Consoles other people had sent in but were fixed suposedly. Well I got 5 refurbs and all of them died of either hardware failure (like my launch console) or the DVD drive crashing and scratching and ruining a couple of my games:(

It took me weeks of argueing and fighting with MS for them to send me a BRAND NEW CONSOLE! I told them a refurb was unacceptable and finnally they caved when they spoke to my lawyer.....not a joke either!  My brand new one which is about 3 months old now has worked fantastically to say the least. The problems should be fixed by now and the warranty is good for a year now so I would think IF you did have any trouble they would just send you a new one. But even here in the forums I dont see many red light threads anymore. My advice to the topic creaor would be to buy one.....its worth it now:)

I am on my fourht since November.  The return policy is great, however, they send you junk back.  My brother has a PS3 and it is nowhere near the 360.  I'd say get it.

I assume by that mean you bought a PS3 (:P) anyway you should definitly get a 360. The ring of death is real, howerver its the first batch that had more problems. I have had mine for about 7 months now and it works fine. Just give it air, don't move it while running, and don't do anything to void the warrenty and it should be fine.

I had a launch console and the dvd drive broke Feb. 2, 2007, I sent it in and got a new one back yesterday, so make sure to get a good service plan and get ready for the best gaming out there

If any electronic device ships with a defect it will break regardless of what you do to it, you are just prolonging the inevitable by "treating it right". I've had my 360 in an entertainment unit, in a somewhat closed environment, it has been this way for almost 17 months and the reason it doesn't break is because it doesn't have anything wrong with it. Manufacturing defects are something we have to deal with in order to have these inexpensive, powerful devices. I agree that mistreating the device can prove dreadful, but all you need to do is use it normally, you don't need to hire a priest or some nonsense to make sure the room you are playing in is safe.
