i like ragdoll physics myself. They can be funny at times. Also it allows for there to be different types of deaths. i mean i hate seeing the same animation over and over when something dies. And its not exactly real either when someone gets hit by a cannon and just lays down where they were standing ;)
Since when does a body go completely limp, and become more flexible then a olympic gymnist when a person dies? It takes away from the game if you ask me, because it just looks so odd to be a body just go "flopping" around like that. I'd prefer animations myself, or something.SymphonicWaves
well if a person dies they arent going to have any control over thier body so i think ragdoll physics are quite realistic. some games mess the rag doll physics up and the bodys go flopping around like fish trying to breath but i think some games do it very well. i find animation really cheap and unsatisfying.

what he said, Half-Life 2 has the best physics i think
More games need to adapt Euphoria that LucasArts is using for the new Indiana Jones game. There are no ragdoll physics and no canned animations. Each time something gets hit, it reacts in a different way and naturally.alienhunter187
Yeh this guy is correctttttttt. It's also being used in GTAIV and that new Star Wars game.

Halo 3 beta has some pretty sick physics actually. I find it alot more enjoyable to watch people die now. But yea, Half-Life 2 has some very good physics.
Give an example of a game where the ragdoll physics look great. And lol at you somehow trying to insult me by saying my games have inferior ragdoll physics or something, I play the same games as you buddy.SymphonicWaves
Halo 3 (beta) 'n Half-Life 2 are some great examples. Also they didn't say the games that only you played had crappy physics budd, but some games have better ragdoll physics then others. They ment you probably played some games with crappy ragdoll physics. Like GeOW... The Locust are supposed to be big heavy armored aliens but when you kill em you can run around 'n play soccer with their dead bodies'? Umm,,, yea okayy,,,
I like ragdoll for the some purpose of humor. I dont care that his body should of blown into bits, I much rather see it go fliping across the room, smack a wall, then bounce another 5 feet.limpbizkit818
You are a genious! who doesnt love that? :D
Unreal Tourny 2004 is king for what you mentioned

Whocares... i dunno about you, but i would much rather my xbox360 spend its processing power on things that are moving than on figuring out mass physics for a dead, useless body on screen... :|
Ragdoll physics works... and takes up no power on the xbox360's resources... means more power for those things that count more than the physics of a dead body/...

Without ragdoll physics, a character wouldn't react at all when being shot. Ragdoll effects make video games awesome. And who the hell doesn't enjoy shooting a dead body and having it move around?

How do you k now they don't tax the processing power at all? If it's in the game, something has to power it duh. And I think realistic movements when someone get's killed would enhance the game alot more, appearence wise at least.
I love Ragdoll physics.
For example the Saints Row physics were hilarious and much more entertaining than say... GTA.
Blasting someone with fully custimised silverballers in hitman blood money and watching there body fly half way across the map makes me smerk each time.SexxiyGunzz
aww you beat me to the himan reference- yeah ragdoll is awesome- r6:V is also a good example of well-made ragdoll
Seems to me you never played FEAR yet...

That's what i was thinking. They don't overexaggerate the ragdoll physics.

NO NO NO NO! Ragdoll physics make games funny, thus adding to the entertainment. Come on man, how can you NOT find humor in ragdoll physics.
really??i think rag doll is a revolution itself.Im kinda bored to see the same animation when somthting dies, besides,it makes u laugh sometimes
Oblivion, man! You can move individual limbs and body parts! It's a contortionist's wet dream!
I remember trying to stuff some dead pirates into a cupboard. Funniest 30 minutes of gaming in my life.
hey Oblvion had some pretty good rag doll physics except the Trolls Elytra's and thee races when theirs forearms are bent towards their head. Kind of hard to explain that. Anyways what was cool about Oblivions physics was that everything was interactable so if you fling a fireball with a 10ft radius everything around it will fly around which is pretty neat.contaminated
I think Oblivion is a bad example actually. When you kill a person they acually go limp and just fall to the ground. Their arms grab their sides and their legs click together before they fall also. But thats only when you kill with swords. Other than that the physics is kinda improved.
But like the other guy above me. Yea it still adds alot of fun moving the bodies :D
Ragdoll physics are still much better than having animated deaths though. Trust me, go back and play golden eye and you'll soon get sick of seeing guys dieing the exact same way. Especially when you use a grenade or something and they all have the same death animation sequence.
Some games have awfull ragdoll physics, some have very good ragdoll physics. I think Ghost Recon has some excellent ones. If people are running you'll often see people stumble from the momentum before they go limp and fall. But as others have mentioned people are developing more advanced techniques based on ragdoll physics. i.e. those being used by Lucas Arts.
Once developers start using the Euphoria engine gone will be the clumsy misuse of ragdol. Euphoria blends animations with ragdol to create the ultimate gaming experiance.

yeah
but ragdoll physics, from what i can remember, is only in Gears of War if you use the "no blood and no bad language" option
