There are zero signs that HD-DVD is going to win out, all you have to do is punch in sales figures. Universal is expected to go neutral by the end of the year, once that happens it's so long for HD-DVD. Even if Universal stays with them, the future looks pretty bleak. The only advantage HD-DVD had was cheaper players, but with Blu ray players dropping in price and huge price cuts by the end of the year, HD-DVD will not even be able to claim that.
It's all about content. The majority of current blockbusters are either neutral or Blu ray only. Who cares how cheap the HD-DVD players are if most movies are unavailable for it.
The adult indistry uses both formats, and if you wanna talk about monopolys, go speak to MS... the company with the worlds largest monopoly.teebeenzcan you buy a mac... oh wait...yes you can!
Unortunately, HDDVD will be dead soon. Promise.
Even if the porn industry DID back HDDVD, it wouldn't matter. This is not the same time as VHS and Beta. VHS won way back because the industry supported them, but that was in a time when porn first became mainstream and it was the ONLY way to watch it.  HDDVD sales are down, and so more and more will back bluray. The entire industry wants a winner, because supporting two competing formats is too much on the consumer. They are going to jump on whichever one gets the slightest lead- and it's bluray. It sucks, but that is how it is and will be.
sometimes it pisses me off when better technology is created...it means im going to have to replace something...and i dont feel like spending more money...so fk it. ill wait years before i go for it, if i go for it.Â
new technology is created, its expensive, its just a little improvement and nothing i would even notice, but one day ill have no choice but to either buy the damn thing or listen to the radio for my entertainment.

So...why did you buy a 360?
"don't care which one wins, I just wish somebody would win so I could buy something. know what i mean, it's the consumer that gets screwed over in the end. "
Amen. I still haven't gotten all of my VHS titles on DVD and now there's HD and Blu-Ray. Within another couple of years there's going to be another format or two with better resolution. I don't mind spending money on a new player, but I want a way to convert my current collection instead of having to completely replace it.
I didn't feel like going through all the posts, but I actually have to disagree with you. HD DVD is actually probably going to win. Why? Well for a couple of reasons. The Adult-Film industry backs HD DVD...and they backed VHS back when betamax was the **** and they basically sealed betamax's fate from that. Disney is actually deciding to switch to selling on both Blu-ray and HD DVD after first announcing that they were exclusive for blu-ray. Not a good sign for blu-ray considering Disney DVDs are arguably some of the best selling dvds. Sony is not only a big-time electronics company, but also a a major motion picture company...uh oh. Monopoly? I smell it. HD DVD is cheaper for now as well, and from the grapevine, I hear its more efficient to make...whatever. Anyway, Sony's exec's will likely commit suicide if blu-ray falls apart. Why do you all doubt Microsoft's ability to be the best in anything they do? Everyone thought the XBOX would flop...it ended up being the BETTER console of the two (PS2)...however PS2 had a slew of companies backing them...still, I think most (real) gamers would no doubt say XBOX was the premier system of the last generation (excluding the cube). Microsoft isn't stupid...they know what their doing. Sony may have more companies backing them, but Microsoft may have the RIGHT companies backing them. Think about that.I think you're on crack. Just look at the selling numbers on HD DVDs versus Blu Ray discs. Also, the PS2 is still selling--how's the Xbox doing? Although I do agree that the Xbox was better then the gamecube. Try not to bring up the word 'monopoly' when it comes to big companies---esp. MS, that's just not thinking about what you're saying.

I'm actually going to go against this statement. Currently I purchase movies/games for 40+ Blockbuster Video stores. Everything I've seen as well as heard from most studios, BluRay is going to win. You don't have to look any further than Microsoft stating that they are already looking into designing a BluRay player for X360 "incase" HD loses the format war. By the way I talk to stuido reps, the Disney rep is guessing BluRay will win out. A guess yes, but when you talk to stuido reps the majority of them believe the format that will come out on top is BluRay.
The fact you base part of your opinion on porn is hiliarious. Do you honestly think Debbie Does Dallas Again will make or break BluRay? You aren't serious are you?

Not to mention avoiding the embarrassment of walking to the counter with 5 hd-dvds of porn.Internet = free porn
porn on hd-dvd = $30 or more per movie
Which do you think people will use.

HD-DVDs look much better then the HD videos on marketplace. And they sound much better. HD-DVD is able to have higher bit rates and extras you dont get by downloading. HD-DVD is far from dead. I think they are gonna end up winning. The players are getting cheaper. and Universal is backing them and starting to release alot of movies. On Bluray FOX has pulled almost all there releases . but both arent selling enuogh to delcare a winnerIt's too early to call. As long as HD DVD continues to do well in the stand-alone market, it will survive.
To be honest though, I really don't see the point of either Blu-Ray or HD DVD. Not when you can get high definition movies easily on your TV.
thinicer
for titles right now coming out on both formats
Â
Â
Planet Earth: on Bluray its ranked 46 and the HD-DVD is ranked 27
 Happy Fee: Bluray: 114  HD-DVD 90
Â
Matrix Bluray: Unavailable  HD-DVD 208

I have no idea which side will win out but I know for sure that the battle is far from over.Â
Blue-Ray is selling more for a few simple reasons
1: PS3 bundled with a disc (every PS3 sold is a blue-ray disc sold)
2: The 2 for one deals that big box stores have had on blue ray (2 disc's sold per 1 actually purchesed)
HD DVD is not dead because
1: HD DVD players are outselling blue ray players
2: HD DVD has had no new releases in a few months, when must have movies come out such as the Matrix, the battle beginsMrBetterThenYou
Blu-rayÂ
1. There is no blu-ray movie bundled with the PS3. The first 500k ps3's had a movie bundled. They were gone by Dec.
2. That deal was for Sony picture films only(about 12 titles) and lasted all of 2 weeks at certain stores. Only Frys for 1 week and 2 weeks and Best Buy as far as I know.
HD DVD
1. Yes they sell better as Standalone units. But they cannot compete with the estimate 8-10 million ps3's alone that will be sold this year worldwide.
2. That tells you something right there. And if you think Matrix will sell more units then Pirates of the Carribean 1 & 2 being released on blu-ray you have no clue at all. Pirates 1 Is the best selling live action movie ever on DVD (which will soon be pasted up by Pirates 2 if it hasn't already). Pirates 2 grossed over 500 million at US box offices. Pirates 2 is the fastest selling DVD in history and is on pace to outsell the best selling dvd ever Little Nemo. Which is another disney film that will also be exclusive to blu-ray when it is released.

and when it comes to people who dont play games are gonna want a standalone player not a ps3. and seeing a 399.99 (plus free movies) standalone player versus a 799.99 standalone with maybe Fifth Element which has a crappy transfer
I've seen HD-DVD have a sort of counter attack as far as advertising goes. But i don't think porn will have the effect it did. With the internet and PPV DVD's arn't as popualr as it was to view pr0n on.

But I just want better resolution! It's nothing to be ashamed of, I just can't get off on a regular image anymore! I need more pixels, more of those long, luscious, pixels!

FYI, right now BluRay players are dropping in prices. By the 4th qtr, you will have $300 HD players and $400 BluRay players. I work in the industry so I know what I'm talking about. Basically you have a $100 dollar difference during the 4th qtr which is the make or break time period for both formats. $100 difference by the 4th qtr is nothing, it will come down to who has the better software.
Tell me how Universal plans to out duel Spiderman 3 and Pirates of the C. 3 during the 4th qtr. Here's a hint, they can't......unless they get a stuido like Warner, Fox, Paramount or Dreamworks to go exclusive to HD. Add in the the PS3 sales to the regular BluRay hardware sales......I can't see how HD will win this war. Maybe if Universal had some huge titles coming out in the 4th qtr, but right now I don't see it. Everything that could be big, BluRay is going to get as well (like Transformers :P ). Having Spiderman 3 exclusive to BluRay could infact blow HD out of the water.
This is the truth right here. The math doesn't lie and you can already see retailers pulling the HD-DVD movies from their shelves and slowing restock on what they still have.Unortunately, HDDVD will be dead soon. Promise.

Your quote is only true in certain areas. Any of you that think 2-3 more years of a ware aren't in store are sadly mistaken. HD-DVD sales are down because of a slow release schedule that is going to be ramped up soon, price is still a factor for players and BR was boasting really high numbers because they were counting all of the free rebate, 2 for 1 rebate, etc... as sales. BR is in the lead but the numbers being provided are skewed because of these offers. Will HD-DVD count their 5 free titles with purchase of hardware? Who knows, but either way, we hardly matter one bit in the format war. The people who can't afford, and eventually buy the $200 player in time (just like with consoles) and value it alot less than people discussing it on a forum are far from putting their important dollars into the mix, and upscaling DVD players are going to do nothing but help prolong the war.
I just went format neutral because I'm not waiting 3-4 years for it to draw out only for MS to play the trump card of pushing downloadable content a few years after that.
