Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser explains the "massive headache" implied in bringing the world such a complex and nuanced experience...

In an interview exclusive to NowGamer and sister publication games™, Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser has confessed that development of Red Dead Redemption has been a "complete nightmare" on a technical level.

With most people familiar with the western genre through movies, Rockstar set out to make the game instantly recognisable, but it's been no small feat: "From a technical perspective, it was a complete nightmare, because we wanted to include so many things that were vital to making the game we wanted and a massive headache to make fun and look right - amazing gunfight physics, beautiful horses, lassos, stagecoaches with so many moving parts, animals, and so on," said Houser.

"amazing gunfight physics, beautiful horses, lassos"

"For the game to be fun and engaging and everything we hoped it could be, we had to include a huge range of classic western moments – stand-offs, duels, stagecoach fights, gunfights on trains, hold-ups, bounty hunting, and so on. This is the strength of the game, but doing this in a seamless way in a massive open world was a huge challenge."

And it looks like the complete nightmare will have been well worth the trouble...can't wait until this game comes out.

I got to talk with some of the Rockstar people at PAX while playing it and you would not believe the work that went into the game.

The teams that have been working around the clock to make such a powerhouse is amazing, I really do hope they have a lot of behind the scenes stuff on Inside XBOX about it. I could have talked to those guys all day long (and played the game lol)

This is why I love Rockstar. They make games no one else could and along with Bioware and Bethesda, I buy every game they spit out. Never let me down.

I'm sure it was alot of work to put this together, it will have been well worth it if it isn't boring like GTA IV.

Can't wait for this game. Every trailer, picture, and interview I have seen is awesome. Too bad this comes out the same day as Alan Wake. Wallet's gonna take a hit that month for sure. Also, is that Berserk in your profile? That DC game was friggin badass, loved it.
