Hi everyone! So i was just watching some trailers for Red Dead Redemption whilst browsing play.com as its been like 2 months since i've last bought a game so its probably time for a new one.... anyway i was just wondering whether or not it is as good as it is portrayed. I love western games such as Gun and Call of Jaurez and am still playing gta 4 to this day. Have Rockstar lived up to there name? or is it another hyped up game like call of duty?

Seriously? No offense, but have you read any of the reviews? If just about every review is highly positive, why would you think otherwise?

Well a few of my friends bought the game and a few of them said it was not as good as expected and one took the game back after two days because he hated it so much... granted he plays ps3... I just wanted to make sure since i havent played 360 for like 21 days and hevent checked up on the latest releases for even longer... no better way to find out than asking the ever helpful gamespot community :)

I loved it and this is from a gamer who hated GTAIV and never got interest in Gun or Call of Juarez.

Whether you own a PS3 or Xbox shouldn't make your opinion of the game any different. If your friend didn't like it, he probably wouldn't have liked it if he owned a 360. I'll say this though. The game received the review scores that it did for a reason. And I mean the reviews from official game critics, not just random users on Gamespot or other sites because not everyone out there will love every game. And this isn't a case of reviewers sucking up to Rockstar just because they're Rockstar.

To present an objective point of view: Don't believe the hype. I did, and I am disappointed. Maybe it's due to my immense anticipation for this title but I have not even finished the story mode and already I am getting tired of the game. At this point, I feel like it is going to be a chore to finish the campaign, but I am going to do it anyhow simply because it would be nice to see how it all wraps up and if the plot actually makes sense in the end. As is, there's not much plot to speak of. I know a lot of people are hailing it for it's "good story", but even in terms of a traditional Western story the one presented in RDR feels pretty barebones. It boils down to your protagonist (or antagonist, depending on how you want to look at it) getting sent off by government agents to track down members of his ex-gang and either kill or capture them. The quirk is that the government has your family captive, and they are not telling you where they are being held until you finish certain tasks for them. Along the way you meet plenty of archetypal side characters and complete tasks for them, but none of them are ever really fleshed out as well as they could be, and just as you are getting attached to certain characters the plot decides to take you off to another part of the world where you will never interact with those characters again.

Apart from my gripes with the story, there are some serious graphical glitches that need to be addressed. Within the first hour or so of playing the game, these shortcomings can already be seen. Most of these glitches occured when I first entered the town of Armadillo, where I saw boxes floating in the air, offbeat character animations, and a musician in the local saloon who always likes to stand on top of his stool when he gets up to take a break. I also encountered floating brooms in the town of Blackwater. These glitches shouldn't be there. There's really no reason for it, and when you encounter them it can really take you out of the experience.

On top of all of these things, there's no radio on your horse. No, just kidding. But seriously, on top of all that, the main character is kind of a prick and you really want to just beat him in the face everytime he opens his mouth. At least I did. He doesn't really come off as a bad ass prick either, but instead pretty much just a prick and a douchebag. I guess that's to be expected though, seeing as the days of the true Western epic are over and will likely never see the light of day ever again, neither in Hollywood nor the videogame world.

The shooting is definitely the best part of this game, but everything else from the skinning of animals to the collection of plantlife could have been more intriguing and/or interactive. These are just my views, of course, and who am I really? Just another enthusiastic gamer with a voice who wishes he had used his money to buy Alan Wake instead.

@Intrakitt - Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course. And like I said that not everyone will love every game. There are bound to be people out there who dislike any game. By no means is the game absolutely and completely perfect. Sure there are some minor graphical glitches here and there. Something that most every reviewer has taken note of. I feel they are certainly forgivable considering the scope of this game and nothing that is game breaking in most people's opinions. I'm not sure how you came to your opinion on John Marston as character. I'm just saying that the few negative player reviews like your own, and I'm not afraid to say that you are in the minority of public opinion, should prevent the TC from trying this game and forming his own opinion. At the same time if 95% of critics are giving this game outstanding reviews, that's worth taking note. http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/reddeadredemption?part=rss

This game is very overrated. I got 100% on it yesterday, only because I was pretty close after beating the game. It basically plays like GTA 4 in the Wild West (even though people say it doesn't). It has the waypoint system, taxi system, John Marston jumps exactly like Niko Bellic, he's not necessarily a good or bad guy (just like Niko), the dialogue is pretty damn boring most of the time, half of the stranger quests (sidequests) are just a couple of cutscenes thrown together. The only thing that it did on its own are the random events that happen, like when someone gets a horse stolen and you have to go get it. I admit those were pretty cool for a while, but after doing so many of them they became more annoying than anything (hearing the guy yell "They took my money!" for the 20th time). The story is pretty dull most or the time, since almost every damn mission you're just doing someone's dirty work basically.

I admit the ending was pretty good, not they typical one that most games have, but at the same time it kind of sucks in a way.

This isn't a bad game, but it's nowhere near a 9/10 like all these people have been giving it, it's more like a 7/10, considering it just feels like I'm playing GTA 4 in a different time period.

Oh, and GTA 4 is better too, because it actually has itneresting dialogue, story and missions, not like this game where most of the things you have to dull aren't all that fun.

For me to like RDR, it had to jump over some difficult hurdles. For one, I'm a very picky buyer. I hardly buy games new at $60. 99% of the time, they're not worth it (hell, most are not even worth half of that...). This was also the first game I pre-ordered in years (my last pre-order, Dungeon Lords, left a very bad taste in my mouth to say the least). I don't like Westerns one bit. And finally, I was sorely dissapointed with GTA IV so my faith in R* was likewise reduced. Despite all those weighing against it, I took a chance and damn am I glad that I did. The game is easily one of my favorites this gen. It's so much fun to play and surprisenly has a lot to do and see despite the desert-like aspect of the West. Oddly enough, I still don't care for Westerns, but I'd play this game anyday of the week.

Yes its worth it!! Its awesome!

Way better then all teh GTA games imo.

RDR has better graphics, better gameplay, better voice acting, MUCH better story and its more fun then GTA IV.

Its up there with Mass Effect2 and Alpha Protocol as my favorite games so far in 2010

It's overrated. Fun for a while, but overrated. GTA IV is superior in every way aside from the cover system and maybe the graphics. In RDR the cover system works a lot better than in GTA IV and there also seems to be less pop in too. Other than that I don't think RDR is better. I got bored of it rather quickly. I'd say rent it first.

Buy it. It's fun, and better than GTA IV, but it still suffers from repetitive "go to point X and kill some dude" type missions.

wait for a price drop, story is good until the disappointing ending and after you finish the story the multiplayer (which is pretty bad) gets old , only good part is free roam. If you don't already own gta 4 i suggest getting that, because it has so much more. This game feels like a rehash.
