Hey guys, despite what you may think due to my avatar and sig - I also own a 360 and love it.

I've been hearing many good things about Mass Effect, since the sequel is coming out soon. I played it at a friends house for about 10 minutes and it didnt exactly blow me away. I didnt have enough time to get comfortable with it I guess. So what's so good about this game? What makes it stand out? Is there online play? Is it worth a purchase at this point or should I just wait for ME2?

I'm no sales man but I'll shamelessly advertise my review. http://uk.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/masseffect/player_review.html?id=585672&tag=all-about;review1 There are some really great aspects and a few short fallings, I recommend reading through as many reader reviews as you can. Also check out video reviews on youtube. It is my favourite game this gen and I can't wait for number 2.

It is advised that you have played through the first Mass Effect, before playing the sequel, because the choices you made will be transferred. There's also the story. The story is great, and so is the gameplay. But if you don't like dialogue in games, I guess this game isn't something for you.

I would defintiely suggest purchasing Mass Effect. The story is great and the gameplay is addicting. However, if you are the type of person who skips cutscenes, this isn't the game for you. Mass Effect should be available at a bargain now, so it should be a no brainer! Seeing as the story is an integral part of the series I suggest buying number one before number 2.

The game starts off very slow so 10 minutes isn't really a good measure of it. For me, it was mediocre as hell for the first like 2-3 hours but gets radically better after that. The game is pretty kick ass. The combat is alot of fun. It's my favorite game this gen.

I recommend playing the 1st Mass Effect if you plan on getting the sequel. I got it for $60 and it was so worth it. Now it goes for $20, it's a steal!

It starts off slow. The story is what drives this game. I am really into astronomy, which really helped me get into the story, but even if you aren't, it is one of the best out of any video game, ever. The combat actually becomes fun the more you play it. I would recommend playing as a biotic. It really makes the combat a lot better, because it isn't 1 dimensional like playing as soldier. And, oh yeah, IT'S $20 NEW!! And $15 used from gamestop. Can't go wrong.

[QUOTE="delta4062"]Sell yourself on it you...i-rock-socks

This is what I was thinking. If I want to know how good a game is, I go looking at critic and gamer reviews or watch some videos of the gameplay on YouTube. I do not go asking random people on a forum to try to sell me on the game. To be helpful and contribute to the thread however, I will say the game is absolutely awesome if you're a fan of Western style RPGs especially those made by Bioware. If you're not a fan of story driven action games, then this is not for you. I'm currently on my 3rd playthrough and it's still a lot of fun.

1) I got it for 9.99 brand new, last week at EB games.

2) Amazing story. Draws you in, you want to make the decisions in the game. Some of those descisions are HARD! I sat there for like 5 minutes just going WTF do I do here!!!?

Overll the game is awesome i have beaten it twice since last wensday. Just so into this game. First couple hours hours where harsh and i was pretty upset and i have read and watch every review on this game and i was still frustrated, but when i figured out the combat and the depth of the weapon upgrading and the nice leveling sytem, It is a Awesome game!!! Highly highly recommend it.

Yis its very good if your into your rpg's, even more so if your a sci-fi fan.

No it has no online modes

It has a brilliant detailed story which does actually make you feel in control of whats going on (and in many cases you actually are!), multiple endings, a great (and simple) character building system, tons upon tons of side quests to indulge in, action is great even if the circle menu does get in the way now and then and not to mention the brilliant characters who you will actually care about as the quest goes on, specially Saren (the evil dude), by himself he is almost the best reason to get the game just to see how a bad guy role can be done without conforming to **** loads of stereo types etc

On the con side it does have a few issues like the inventory system is complete crap, all your items are basically stuffed into a series of long lists in the order that you got the item, their not even split it into race specific catagories making equiping your characters a right pain the bum if you dont keep on top of it as you go.

Theres also a couple of other probs like loading times that ocassionally pop up in the worse possible place and a couple of graphics issues but meh thats about the worse of it.

In short if your an rpg fan (whether your into sci-fi or not) you owe it to yourself to buy this game!

And no dont just skip to mass effect 2, judging by the amount of detail stuffed into mass effects story and universe (Everything from cultures to technology is also given detail) you wont have a clue whats going on if you just skip to number 2.

Um, why not just read reviews? There's plenty out there. Why do you need us to sell you on it? It's a great game. If you didn't like it, then fine, don't buy it. Still a universally loved game, though.

I'll probably skip this game. I do not like tons of dialogue in games. The only game with alot of dialogue that I enjoy is MGS4 and even Gears... I have a feeling Mass Effect will be too slow paced for me.

great game, definitely worth the buy; it can get very repitive if you're the type that wants to beat every single side mission and explore everything there is to explore, though. i've beaten it 3 or 4 timesand enjoyed it very much every time and i don't typically beat the same game over and over.

Mass Effect is the kind of game you need to sit down with and give it time. It has a really great setting, atmosphere and decent story which gets quite immersive later on. The game is pretty cheap these days so I'd say go ahead and check it out if you like RPGs.

Overwhelming? How could a video game of all things be overwhelming? I can see how some jobs or certain positions at certain companies could be overwhelming or even certain college classes but a video game?

Well yeah it was. Considering I have no experience in RPGs or anything. I couldn't use the cover system well. It seemed like there was too many things to remember, and I didn't understand how they wanted me to fight the enemies, they seemed to hard.

I have some other brief questions about ME:

1)When you finish the main storyline, does it allow you to continue playing side quests or does the game end?

2)when they talk about transferring your character to ME2, they just mean the choices you made in ME1, not your whole character, correct? Otherwise, they'd have people transferring fully levelled up characters.

Once you finish the game it ends, but you can start a new game with your current level at end game and go up a couple difficulties if you want.

Not sure what they mean yet they haven't released any reasons why they said that yet unfortunately.

Thanks for the info.

What's more fun to play as, Adept, Soldier, or Vanguard? I'm leaning toward Adept now that you said you can play again with the difficulty cranked up. I was gonna do Soldier first then Adept afterwards.

because publication reviews dont always match reality.

for example: GTAIV got 10/10 on many sites/magazines yet most users will tell you otherwise.

The beginning of the game starts out a little slow but once you get into it, the story really grabs you in. I've done 2 playthroughs already and I'm thinking about doing a third just to understand the whole story before the 2nd comes out. Seriously man it's a great game, pick it up!

Just buy the game and play through it you idiot. It has to be cheap by now and it is an amazing RPG. If you like RPGs or the Knights of the Old Republic games (if you've played them) then buy it. Otherwise, if you're too dumb to AT LEAST rent it and play through it, then you're stupid and cheap and it's your loss.saiyanlarry

I'm not "acting tough." I'm simply a gamer who has played all the Bioware console RPGs since KOTOR1. If anyone has to ask questions on a forum like this guy then they are just sad. Rent it, borrow it, or buy it used. Is that so tough?

Hey guys, despite what you may think due to my avatar and sig - I also own a 360 and love it.

I've been hearing many good things about Mass Effect, since the sequel is coming out soon. I played it at a friends house for about 10 minutes and it didnt exactly blow me away. I didnt have enough time to get comfortable with it I guess. So what's so good about this game? What makes it stand out? Is there online play? Is it worth a purchase at this point or should I just wait for ME2?

For $30 (or is it 20?) i'd say it's definately worth a purchase. I definately wouldn't say it's Bioware's best work yet (same people who made Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire), but i think it has a really good story which will likely continue on with Mass Effect 2. On top of that, the developers said to keep any game data from the first game as there will be something that carries over in some way (they really haven't said much about it other than that). It's also got great dialogue between the characters in the game, and if you're a fan of the games where you make decisions that make an impact on the game, then you'll like this. It also gets my vote for best graphics on next-gen consoles.

I was one of the iffy guys on Mass Effect, but at $20 I took the plunge. Deep gameplay, masterful and cinematic story-telling, great characters and a fully realized universe all come together to make one of the greatest games ever made. And I don't use that term lightly, Mass Effect may just be the greatest game I've played in a long time. The plot twists are brutal, the villains are fully fleshed out, the universe is believable and the story is emotionally charged, letting the character's action shape it.

The game rocks, pretty much.

You get used to it. I always suck at rpgs with a different combat system for about 3 hours, then it starts making sense. If this is like your first RPG, sadly you jumped into one with like the most horrible of horrible inventory systems so you'll probably be confused at first, then just annoyed. I didn't really wrap my head around how to use the combat effectively until I had left the citadel area. You can't run and gun or you'll die alot at first, but at the same time you shouldn't stick to one spot. If you keep playing it, you'll start to get it.

Also, Wrex and Garus are HORRIBLE. Garus is kinda ok, but Wrex is just terrible. He always dies instantly. No matter where I take him, no matter how I outfit him, he dies. In my first playthrough I used to use Wrex and Tali, the scrawny alien with zero combat abilities... somehow Tali is killing tons of people, taking cover, keeping her health up. Meanwhile Wrex died within 20 seconds of entering combat everytime. His AI is terrible compared to everyone else. Garus is similar too. Those two are just... maybe it's me and how I play, but they are like the worst possible teammates ever.

Everyone else can hold their own in a fight. Ashley is a beast though. If you're getting killed alot, start bringing her. She pretty much never dies and she's like Master Chief on the battlefield.
