So, i never did buy mass effect. Would it be necessary for me to beat the first one before i buy the second?

I think you'd be extremely foolish to do that.

Necessary no, but it would be nice if you knew what the story behind it was.

Yeah, this statement right here saddens me. You can pick up a brand new copy for like 12 bucks or so.

Seeing as you can transfer your save file from the first game, I would recommend it. I would buy it after ME2's come out, you'll probably be able to pick it up for about a fiver then.

In my opinion, yes. First of all it will help you get familiar with the game, the interface, powers, races, the overall universe Mass Effect takes place in before you play the sequal. Also, it should be noted that you can import your saved character from ME1 to ME2 and you will get a benefit to your starting character (I believe it results in boosts to health and equipment but I am not sure - they have announced it will give you some perks and I've forgotten exactly what they said.) But most importantly to me, there are characters who you will meet a second time in ME2 and depending on choices you made in the first they will respond differently or different things will happen than if you have not played ME1. To me that sounds really interesting and makes it worthwhile.

Honestly, if you want to get the second it would be wise to get the first game. But, that's your choice.

I did, but you don't have to. They already said that they have created a canon for people starting on ME2 and the background and story of that canon will likely be filled in through the codex or told to you at the beginning of the game. But it would probably be a better experience to create your own cannon by playing through the first game. you know decide whose alive after the first game, your relationship with them etc etc. I would recommend it but it is no way a requirement.

If you're a huge nerd like me, then you'll most definitely want to play the first one before you play the second. The games play like an interactive movie, and even though the stories are independent of each other, I think the overall experience will be a lot more rewarding since you'll appreciate all the positive changes better. If you play the second one first, you won't enjoy the first one as much. See what I mean? It's really up to you though.

Took me 10 hours without doing any sidequests, but I'm replaying it again as a female now and trying to do everything.

seeming we have no idea how tied in the story of ME2 is to the ME1 plot I have no idea. But with all the 'consequences' that they say carried over is any indication I would think it crazy not to have played the first one.

I really think that you should because a lot of the decisions you make carry over to the sequel. Things like your lover interest, how you treated certain sidequests, and certain characters that lived or died. There are, as usual, a lot of decisions in the end game that are going to make it over to the sequel as well.

as the developers have mentioned; you don't have to play the first game to enjoy mass effect 2.

It's not necessary, but you probably should to get familiar with the universe, story, and gameplay. Not to mention to see if you'll like the series (If you don't like 1, you probably won't like 2).

If you like RPGs or Bio-Ware games then you should check out the original because it's a good game but I doubt you won't be able to understand the story of the sequel without playing the original.

You should buy the game before playing the sequel, it will explain the backstory of the sequel, and will make sense. I do have the original game as of Jan 2010 (I did not bought it until this month), I have not had a chance to play it yet.

You should buy it. Not only will you find out more about the story, but your imported character will get a nice bonus at the start of ME2.

the decisions you make in the first (if you decide to import save) will effect the MS2 so just make sure you choose right choices and enjoy.
