I tried looking on google for topics relating to wathcing dvd movies and upscaling them, but got so many forum threads and articles saying one thing and another.

I know the HD-DVD player is out now, so I'm trying to figure out, will my 360 upscale dvd movies on the hdtv? I'm using the component cables btw.

Or will the tv itself do the scaling? I'm confused. The tv I use is plasma up to 1080i.

My guess is you need a HDMI cable.

The Xbox does NOT upconvert DVDs. Your TV will have to do that.

I recommend buying a cheap upconverting DVD player. You have to use DVI or HDMI in order for it to work though.

The best case scenerio is to buy a Blue-Ray player that will also upscale your DVDs to 1080.

if you want best quality might as well get a blue ray player and get blue ray discs instead of upscaling non hd sources

Yes, the PS3 upscales DVD's to 1080P and does a fantastic job at it. So much so that I still buy cheap DVD's when the Blu Ray price is too high for films I'm not that hyped for. As a media player it leaves the 360 in it's wake. My advice is get both if you have the cash, play movies on one and games on the other, and get access to all the exclusivesyou want:)

This is FALSE. WHEN USING HDMI OR VGA, The 360 DOES upscale DVD's... However, when using Component/Composite/S-Video, it does NOT... Why people continutally spew BS around the forums when they have no idea what they are talking about I will never know...

The trouble is only around a third of 360 owners have an HDMI and not many connect through VGA. Most use component.

Prior to the newer machines coming out with HDMI, component was the most common. All HD TV's can display 720P through component and sets bought in the last 2 years can display 1080P through it.

I looked up the answer. I thought it was correct. I went a bit further and can verify what NOD says. I was wrong and I apologize to the TC, but not to NOD. He must've looked up the answer too. So arrogance aside he could've been misinformed at some point in the past and "Spewed some BS" to someone. Then again, maybe that has never happened to him.

My TV does 1080p through component for games, which is awesome. The xbox website only says that it can play DVD's at a max of 480p. Where is this information about the system up converting?....just wondering. I would suggest grabbing a blu-ray player, or a PS3 since you will be almost paying as much just for a player. My blu-ray player upconverts to 1080p and it's great!!
