I havent had my xbox 360 hooked up in about 2 years. so i hook everything up and make sure the net is working in case my game needs updates and microsoft pulled my credit card file from 2 years ago and charged it 140 dollars renewing my online membership without even asking. I cant even say what im feeling right now because id get kicked off the boards. I cant even reverse it yet since its still consodered pending. then once i get that reversed i have to call microsoft and have them remove my credit card from file so they dont keep charging it without my consent.

seriously wtf.

The only way they could have done that is if you set it to auto renewal, so it was your own fault..

It was a simple mistake on his part. You guys jump at this like lions at fresh meat. Cut the guy some slack. tc, you could argue that bc you werent even online, you didnt use thier services. Wont help but, hey. I feel sorry for you tc, i hope for only miracles.

Although what others say is obvious and true, auto-renewal is something that can be easily overlooked especially after you have quit gaming or using the service (despite technically canceling it). It's something everyone needs to be careful with. Although I have to say, it's pretty sneaky and cunning on Microsoft's part.

its bs on microsofts part. If they cared about thier customers they would cancel auto renew at like one or two months offline.

Yeah I guess so, but what can you do. I tihnk if someone ovverlooked something like that, then MS cant be blamed. The only person who can be blamed is the account holder. Not that Im sticking up for MS, they are pretty sneaky...

Yeah... except Microsoft automatically sets your account to auto renewal and never asks you if you want to. It's hidden away in your account settings on xbox.com. It really is a little bit sneaky. If you renew with your credit card, it auto renews you without ever alerting you. I only found it because I was trying to find out if I could remove my credit card information online (which you can do on any other online shop, but apparently you have to call Microsoft to do it on Xbox LIVE). Well... unless it's changed since I last renewed. That was about a year ago, seeing as I was just warned that my subscription is running out soon.

Don't get me wrong, I love LIVE, and I will renew again and again (manually), but you guys are all chewing this poor fellow out for something that Microsoft really doesn't make apparent. He's already got to deal with getting this mess fixed, which I'm sure isn't easy.

Yeah, it sucks. The first time I saw MS kept my credit card info on file I called them to erase the data and now rarely buy anything off XBL and even then only with a card from a retail store.

I'd just call your credit card company and see if they can't do a stop payment on it. Auto renew is one thing if it's a service you continually use like I did with WOW once upon a time, but to auto renew a subscription that's been cut off for over a year is bull and I'd be willing to bet a court would agree with you if it went to that.

They'd have even more unhappy customers that way. If someone stays offline for 2 months, then comes back and finds their account has been downgraded, they'd be just as upset.

Just a few things.

1. Yes it is made clear that it will auto renew unless you cancel it.

2. It is BURIED on xbox.com to cancel auto-renew.

3. You can get 1yr XBL Gold cards on amazon for $36.

That's what I thought, I was wondering what the whole point of this topic was, after all it's not like they can just take your money without permission.

Yeah, man. They do make it almost impossible to find where to cancel the auto pull on the card haha. Just make sure you take the auto-renew from now on.

I just found this out too. I used a pre payed cred. card, every thing was ok until my bro went out of town on a camping trip. He came back and wasn't able to renew his XBL subscription. Wouldn't even let em revert to silver. His account was suspended :?. Long story short it kept charging the card even tho he wasn't on XBL. it went up to 15.98$. I payed that off so we could continue gaming. I still think it's sneaky that they don't even tell you your account is on automatic renewal.

Auto renewal is set to on by default and in the uk, you can't change it on the xbox live website, microsoft make you jump through hoops over the phone. It is a very very underhanded sneaky practise. I wonder if watchdog is still on TV :D We should set Anne Robinson on them.

well what i learned is EVERY SINGLE TIME i put my credit card on and UNCHECKED THE AUTO RENEWAL, i was always charged again, and then i have to waste my time and call them and tell them remove my credit card. so from now on every purchasse i make for my xbox, i go to amazon.com buy it through amazon. no auto renewal and just in case someone hacks my profile they cant steal my credit card. sucks for ya bro feel bad for you

Seriously?

Sure I'll show you

Take a gander....

"b. Payment. When you create a billing account, you enter your payment method. You must be authorized to use the payment method. You authorize us to charge you for the Service and for any paid feature of the Service for which you choose to sign-up or use while this contract is in forceusing your payment method. You will pay all charges in advance. We may charge you a different amount than what you approved. If it is a greater amount, we will tell you the amount and the date of the charge at least 10 days before we make the charge. Also, we may charge you up to the amount you have approved, and notify you in advance of the difference. If your purchase is a subscription, we may bill you for more than one of your prior billing periods together, although we will not bill you more than once in any billing period for each such subscription. Other purchases (such as a one-time download) will be billed when the purchase is made. If we informed you that the Service will be provided indefinitely or automatically renewed, we may automatically renew your Service and charge you for any renewal term at the prices specified in Section8(e). In some cases relating to Service offers available on Xbox 360 consoles, you may have the option to create or renew a subscription with a prepaid card instead of your payment method. Your Service may be cancelled at the end of your subscription term if you do not have a billing account or have not elected to auto-renew your subscription with a charge to your payment method, or you have not entered a prepaid card for purposes of renewing your Service. If you sign up for an Xbox Live Gold Membership on an Xbox 360 console using a prepaid card, your subscription will continue but will downgrade to a free Xbox Live Silver Membership at the end of your pre-paid Gold membership period, regardless of whether you have a billing account . To maintain your Gold membership, you must set your account to automatically renew with a charge to your payment method ,or you must enter a new prepaid card. If you modify your Service from an original Xbox console to an Xbox 360 console, your Service will automatically renew annually at the then-current annual subscription price following the end of your current Service term (regardless of whether that current Service term is an annual or monthly term)."

So if you have Gold you know WHEN YOU SIGN UP that in order to have Gold your account has to be set to renew

That means anyone on a Gold account knows "Hey, I have auto renew on because I'm using a Gold account"

HERE'S THE REST OF THEIR INFO

There is no excuse for you or anyone else not to know this, you can't even sign up for Live until you agree that you've read and understood all the terms.

Wrong? You show YOUR proof it's not set on auto-renewal or it's hinted at when signing up. Defending these kind of malafide, underhanded and outright disgusting way doing business is just sickening.

There you have it. OT: You made the mistake of not cancelling your credit card, or taking off auto renewal, so you have only yourself to blame. Dont try to blame your mistakes on others.

Wrong

You didn't "just" find that out, it's told to you when you sign up for the service

Youre supposed to read it you idiot. You dont go complaining about MS being sneaky when they state everything perfectly clear in their TOS and youre just too stupid to read it.

I just literally got to my credit card information on xbox.com,in less than two minutes. You can delete the number, change etc. No reason to blame Microsoft.

If he's in the US, he should be able to. Anywhere else it seems (I can't and I'm in the UK), you can't do that. Anyway, someone else already posted this answer.
