You'll need a surround system that has an optical input to get surround sound from the 360. The rest of the colored plugs are either composite (yellow, red and white - standard definition picture and stereo sound) or component (red, green and blue - high definition picture only). I know nothing about the Wii and the cables it comes with. Just make sure that whatever system you choose has enough of the correct type of audio inputs so you can connect both systems to it at the same time.

The equipment you need to buy for surround sound is a surround sound reciever, and 6 speakers (FL, FR, BL, BR, center, and the bass box to make 5.1 surround).

You need an optical cable for the 360 to output in 5.1. The normal L/R cables will only produce stereo. Your reciever may simulate surround sound with just L/R channels, but it won't really be surround sound.

The Wii does not and will not support 5.1 surround sound. The Wii does, however, output Dolby ProLogicII, which is the best surround simulation format available (it's better than the stereo output from the 360). Your reciever will need to support ProLogicII for you to maximize the Wii's output.

Hope this helps.

The "normal" TV output is stereo. You use the Red and White (R/L) cables that ships with the 360 for that.

You should go to best buy or circuit city to talk to them if you have no clue about surround sound as there is a lot to consider. Many people get tricked by buying something with "virtual" surround sound (Dolby Pro-Logic, etc). If you want real surround sound you'll want at least 5 speakers (center, right, left, and right-rear, left-rear) and possibly a subwoofer, and a DOLBY DIGITAL reciever.
