How do you guys think of achievements? The way I see it is when I get a game, I look at the achivements and I divide them into 2 groups. One is the achivements I could get and won't take forever, and the ones that are ridiculously hard and will take forever to get(GoW 10,000 kills) the ones in the first group I will try to get them in the fastest time possible, the second group I will try to get but not try as hard because it will take much longer. So for example in GRAW 2 every achievement is easy and achieveable, I have 910/1000 so far and I have had it for exactly 3 weeks. In my mind I shoulda completed all the achievements by now but I don't have as much time to play as most people. But anywyas that's how I see it. But if the achievements are achieveable and not unreasonable(10,000 kills in Gow) then I want to get them ASAP.
Game Informer had a fantastic article about achievements that basically said that they are "more bang for the buck" and they make ordinary games more interesting to play all the way through moreso than if they didn't offer the points. I love the fact that I'm almost 7000 points ahead of most everyone on my friends list (15850 currently) and think that the achievement system is absolutely brilliant. The GI article also said that the achievement system for 360 has helped sales of both consoles and games.
I like them because they will keep me coming back to play the game if I haven't already recieved the achievements. Like I played Gears of Wars numerous times trying to get all the single/multiplayer achievements. I would play it now but I recently let my friend borrow it.
I love acievements. I dont buy games or rent games just for um but I do try to make sure I complete them when I do have the game. For GoW all I need is Seriously and for Def Jam I need like 7 more.
I love the achievements system, in fact I have a real hard time playing games without achievements. I think it gives people a reason to play a game after its beaten. After I beat The Crackdown, I spent many an hour looking for the agility orbs and secret orbs and trying to max out my stats. Without achievements I would have beaten it, traded it in and never looked back, or I may have not even bothered. I also think that game developers have gotten better at making achievements harded to get. King Kong was a joke and so were some of the early sports games. But Gears of War, Oblivion, and some of the more current games have made the achievements system really work.
Im addicted. I actually have a personal goal to get at least 800 points in each of my games. Im getting there very slowly but thankfully, I haven't bought a new game in a while so I can concentrate on the ones I already own.
