I notice how many people who consider buying a 360 are scared of a breakdown. Here are some tips to not become a part of the very minor minority who happen to get the RROD.
I have had my 360 for about a year and a half. Ive left the console running for hours at a time and sometimes overnight by accident. Ive also consistently turned it off and on when obssesively compulsively checking out different games and DVD's at a time and have one time dropped it from 3 feet high in the back of my van.
I have not faced the RROD. How is this possible? I guess part of it is luck. But I would say that the significant majority of it is basically the atmosphere my system is in.
First I have it sitting in a spacious area. My friend had his 360 for about 3 months before he got the RROD, I say its because he put it in such a tight compartment of his entertainment stand that it harboured the heat the console was radiating when playing excessively.
Also, pace yourself when gaming, a few hours at a time. Don't go overboard.
It ain't hard folks I can guarantee you more than half the people who got the RROD either left the console running too long or just the fact that it may be in a tight space and overtime that can stress the system out.
Anyone else who would like to contribute a tip is more than welcome. I know I was nervous about the RROD but not anymore.

Can't agree with you completely, though I do in principle.
I DO think that people are treating their game consoles, not like an electronic component, but as a toy. My 360 is on my TV stand next to my original Xbox (hurry up and BC BG&E, MS!!!) and on a shelf below my DVD player and DVR. I've only moved it once, and that was to plug in my HD-DVD add-on. You hear that? IT DOESN'T GET MOVED. And I do have decent air flow around it. You know, LIKE NEARLY EVERY ELECTRONIC COMPONENT TELLS YOU TO DO IN THE MANUAL.
The result? A launch 360 that has never RRoD'd but still gets played on for HOURS on end (most recently 3 marathon sessions of Viva Pinata and 2 of Halo 3).
MS does have design flaws, but they aren't fatal flaws if you treat your console like its an electronic component and not a toy.
[QUOTE="Shacks210"][QUOTE="ray03314506"][QUOTE="Shacks210"]I don't think PS3 games has anything to do with it. It is all about price. The PS3 has plenty of games as good as the 360, some which are better. When they dropped the PS3 60gb model price it was out selling 360's everywhere. Everyone wants what is cheaper, and the hardware problems with the 360 shows how much cheaper the 360 really is.stones42
Let's not kid anyone. The PS3, almost in it's first year cycle, has only but a handful of good games. Price, quality, timing and games are the determining factors for the success of a game console. The 360's got all of them except for quality which is quite a shame.
Yes, lets not kid anyone, the 360 had garbage games until Gears Of War hit a year after launch, so the fact that the PS3 has a "hand full" of games in less then that should tell people that "no games" is a BS excuse used. PS3 has games, the quality of the system and games are better. The timing problem with Sony is games being pushed back, that is the only problem Sony has with games.
No good games until GeOW?!!
Ghost Recon AW
Oblivion
PGR 3
Viva Pinata
Dead or Alive 4
Condemned
PD0
Call of Duty 2
and a bunch more I cant remember, not to be argumentative, but your statement was flat out wrong
perfect dark zero is a good game? HEH? what are you on?!?!
All of these strategies will not work. There is an inherent design flaw that will eventually cause every single xbox to fail. What is happening is the way Microsoft mounted the heat sink traps heat underneath it causing the motherboard to flex which intern breaks the solder that holds the GPU on the board. The only way to stop this is to open up your box and do the x-clamp replacement, which of course is not possible for most people and voids your warranty. I have done this fix on several RROD xbox's before th 3 year warranty was announced and have had 100% success. So for the average user I would suggest buying an extended warrenty Plinko2
i love 360 and all its games- but this guy is right- all 360s will break eventually. i dont know why people keep saying putting another heatsink ontop will help and that- i find it amazing that even smart people like gaming sites and magazines who prob know a bit about hardware dont say 'well actually its not that' they just feed us this to make us feel better.
That is sad you have to set a time limit to your gaming in fear of your system red ringing.Shacks210
it is sadly to say, another tip is never to turn off the console or turn it on with the button because that is the main cause to the lights always use the controller button
I had my box in a spacious area, on the floor in front of my television, and did not have it on for excessive amounts of time; never more than 1 1/2-2 hours at a time. Your thesis is flawed as far as i'm concerned.Chokobo
its most likely cause you kept turning it on off using the button on the console because that is the main reason as if heard in other threads

helpful hint: just dont think about RROD.stevenmejia007Exactly what I do. if it happens...it happens. I'll go a couple weeks without my 360. I have other things to keep me occupied. MS knows there is a problem...thats why they stepped up to the plate and extended the 90 day warranty to a full 1 year coverage! And now covering the RRoD for 3 years. I bought a $25 extended warranty too. Thats 2 full years of coverage..and an extra for the RRoD. I'm covered. Granted, this bug should have been found in testing. Too late now.
I just don't htink about it and hope for the best. The fact that we as consumers have to worry about it, is a bad sign of defective manufacturing process, however, since we can't change the fact that it could happen, you just have to live with it, and not htink about it, or you will worry all the time evreytime you play.
Did MS screw up? yes, huge, will they fix it? Sort of, but it takes time. I've heard that if you buy an elite there is a slightly better chance of not getting it. Some other tricks are the towel trick and the bottom bash trick. Those will help if you DO get it. Honestly though, 2-6 weeks for a repair means you're out of service on playing yet you paid for it, and this kind of crap shouldn't be happening. I don't ever remember a SNES or N64 back in the day breaking down so easily.
That's my 2 cents.
