Recently my 360 broke, so I had it sent to Microsoft and they replaced it. So I had to redo the setup for my console to see my computer's media, such as music and photos. After that was done, my console started to have the most bizarre problem I've ever seen: going to the music and video tabs work normally and the console displays all my music properly, but when I go to the pictures tab, it says there are none. To temporarily resolve the problem, I plugged in my flash drive to the console, and it doesn't recognize photos on that either!

So basically my Xbox has no idea how to view pictures and I have absolutely no idea why. Can anyone help me out?

The one I'm trying to get registered is a 24-bit Bitmap, but I have several types, including mostly JPEG and GIF. This shouldn't matter at all because when I click on the pictures tab, then select my computer, it says "no pictures found," without even displaying any of my folders. I can see everything perfectly fine through Windows Media Center, but that doesn't help me because I'm looking to use a picture as my dashboard background.

Try resetting your console. I don't mean like, turning it off and back on but going to the settings menu and restoring your system to the default settings. I don't know if it will help but it's worth a shot I guess. :/

Well, it's basically a brand new console, so all the settings are already pretty much at their default, aside from connectivity.

That's interesting... I really don't know what to tell you. Maybe there's something wrong with the firmware on your system.

make sure your folders are in the right place. WMC might be able to show 'lost' pics because they are local media to it.

What do you mean make sure they're in the right place? The console doesn't register any files at all, it's not like I can specify a destination for it. Besides, the standard "pictures" folder shouldn't be too difficult to find.

Yeah, I mean that's where it reads the photos, in the Picture folder. So I was just that if you have those pictures somewhere else than there, it might not be able to find them.

The weirdest part is that the console couldn't even see pictures I had on my flash drive. As an experiment I tried changing the file type from Bitmap to JPEG and it was suddenly able to see it. This is very odd considering it never had problems seeing Bitmap files before, and the images in my Pictures folder are of various file types, including JPEGs.
