There are a couple ways to do this:

To do it the way Microsoft wants you to do it, your PC must be running either XP Media Center Edition or Vista. Microsoft wants you to use the Xbox 360 as a MEDIA CENTER EXTENDER; therefore, you need Media Center, which is built in to every version of Vista. There are free or cheaper ways to stream video, but they require third-party software that may or may not work as well. For example, Orb (http://corp.orb.com/gamers/xbox.htm) offers a way to stream media, including video, to your XBox 360. Orb is free, but is PC only (I think). I know other programs exist. If you already have Vista or XP MCE, start up Media Center, go to settings and follow the step-by-step process to set up Media Center Extender. You might also need to download Windows Media Play 11 and enable UPnP. Hope this helps.

Dude its a pretty easy process to follow I personnely think the media center extender software is the easiest way to establise the link between the pc and xbox 360 to enable the stream. Also dont forget to write down the setup key which your Xbox 360 gives you when you access the media blade on the Xbox 360 and click on media center you will be prompted for this during the setup process when you run extender.

Just because it is easy to you doesn't mean it is easy to everyone. Also, not everyone owns a Media Center PC; those people need an alternative.

I use the media center which can be used on a XP system ( check out xbox.com for details). The draw back is by default you can only watch WMV files and I wanted DivX. So I downloaded Transcode360 and use it with the media center. Very easy to use and get going. Check out transcode and you won't be disapointed.

I prefer to use WMP11 to share the media and use WinAviConverter to convert everything to wmv. I've tried orb and transcode but didnt really like either of them
