No doubt this may have been a problem with some gamers and I have recently come across a gamer who has encountered some threats towards his family even though it was verbal.

Which really led me to another Idea when it came to the reporting and messaging system in online games over Xboxlive

I'vecome across somepeople who are really disrespectul and think they can get away with taking away the enjoyment of others because they feel secure and annonymous behind the Internet but a lot of the times these people have real issues.

Reporting them will only be so effective- but I suggest if you are with a group of other gamers that witness this kind of behavious to advise them to pitch in and everyone make collective complaints towards this user.

MS should give this option to gamers in a party to really increase the effective complaints towards abusive people-
example if there is a gamer who is obviously beinga real jerk and being offensive and swearing out of context of the game or team killing:sexual harrasment, racism, threats towards your life or other family members repeatedly
you can set up an abusive vote towards a particular player and the other people can submit their votes too!

The message will pause the game or a vote will show up on all the other members screen to vote the abusive player. along the lines of:
"This person is violating conduct of Xboxlive policy and behaviour is innapropriate and is clearly being offensive to others"
check the tick box if you strongly agree, agree or disagree"

This will make a bigger impact and be unanimous then a single complaint by individual users and would be far easier and quicker.
This will not be shown to the offending gamer- as to keep the other members annonymous.

also with this group complaint and message it can be carried to the next game the offender tries to attempt to join or connect to - giving all other party members a warning of this users behaviour from the previous group of gamers

examplea message will flashthat this player has had a lot of group complaints against them -would you like to vote to allow them to join your game-please check vote.
It's all up to those players if they would like to play with this person
******I can not stress that the group voting would have to be quick, simple with only a couple of button pressesand easy to do with out interrupting game flow too much.****

The warningreputation message will also remain for some time and will only be removed once they get a reprieve from those who they offended and made the intial group complaint or they have gotten enough preferred votes from non-friend players.

some sort of group complaint policy to really teach others to be more civil and shame them into behaving more appropriatly when they enter into new games and meet new people.

I really think it takes a community effort to really make the online community more fun and not leave a sour taste.

Also to really seperate the channels for underground and casual family friendly communities too.
So those who really feel like being abusive can go to the appropriate channels and be among their fellow abusers if they're into that sort of thing

what do you guys think?

It's a step towards helping the gaming community be more involved in a very quick easy way to make gaming better online.

***p.s. it has to be a quick and simple group voting complaint

I understand sometimes you have to have a thick skin, but also some people have to learn innevitably to grow up and be more adult andthey either learn the easy way or the hard way.

Simple. Disable all microphone support. But then what would be the fun in that? If MS made a rating system that would work on voice control it might be a good idea. It could work something like the rep system does, if one nasty player gets enough negative checks on their system, their microphone and messaging privillages will be taken away for 3+ days.

Lemme give you an example of how this would work in competitive games.

Me: "Hey you!"

You: "what?"

Me: "Ur a f***ot lololololol"

You: "What the hell?"

Me: "LOL I REPORT U!"

You: *Ok, whatever, just one douchebag.*

Me: *Leaves games, and: MSSGE TO ALL FREINDS! REPORT *your gamertag*'s MIC! HE IS A DOUCHE!

You: *no mic for ABSOLUTELY no reason.*

Even when temporary, this system is extremely easily abused and unfair to players who will no doubt get reports for no reason.

Sad part is that no one on XBL is innocent so everyone points fingers everywere. Young ridicule old, old ridicule young and those in the middle just scream, play music and doubt each others sexuality.

It's obvious what makes Xbox Live suck... kids. The majority of kids that play Xbox Live are around 13+ of age who scream racist and offensive things down their microphone and attempt to glitch in every game possible. This is the majority of kids, and although I am not easily offended, I don't doubt some people on Xbox Live will be.meconate
Kids, Tweens, Teens and Adults alike ALL scream, curse and use Sexist, Racism and ageist slurs and insults. You saying 'Kids are the problem' only proves my point due to the fact that even stating an age group should be removed JUST for being that age group is purely ageist. Everyone is the problem, there is no specific group.

I find older players even worse with the racist and offensive content. Not only that some older players say some pretty pornographic subject matter to the younger players. People are just jackasses.

Right. It could easily turn into the scenario like you posted. However they could design it like the rep system, as in you can only vote if you played with the player, but yeah you get a bunch of grouchy clanners in a match and they can ruin it for others quickly.

Yeah, that is pretty much the point I am getting at, Competitive games with a high concentration of negative players or even just good players having a really crappy time will inevitably spawn hundreds upon potentially thousands of cases of false 'Mic-locking' I guess I can call it. I do like your idea, I do, but I don't see it as a solution that can work due to the basic thought process of one of the million of so XBROS out there who are looking to ruin your time to get some lulz.

Ok, point made. I just find the majority of people who... to put it lighty, annoy me are kids, maybe it's because I only really play COD 4 online and so do all these kids. I have had a couple of problems with adults being randomly stupid, but mostly kids. Good point though.

Oh don't get me wrong, I play CoD:WaW, which is no better a community then CoD4, I have even clocked countless hours into Halo 3 in the past (I eventually turned it in too) I know how annoying it gets, I know little kids have big mouths and scream into the mic because they think their voice would be muffled. You can't let yourself narrow this issue down though, it is sorta only fair to make sure you include the big picture even past your own experience. There are kids online who are REALLY cool people, I know a 4 year old (DEAD SERIOUS) who I get a real kick out of playing CoD:WaW with, at the same time most older players can be cool too, my father is a CoD:WaW community member at 40. When it all boils down to it you gotta look at the bad part of XBOX live as not an age group but just a seperate group of people, in essence (the guys who aren't cool people)

Basically, this is the main reason why I do not want to play online. You have offered some good points and remedies I hope that others agree with you. Age is not always a determining factor in all of the abusive behavior. I hope that others will share their ideas and that MS will listen to the gaming online community.

Unfortunately the XBL world will never truly improve, in reality, it will always be this way because the guy who are douchebags WANT to play that way and think its FUNNY. So long as that is the method they best enjoy themselves, no one could ever truly make them stop. Heck, when I play games, I occasionally take up the role of Greifer and make my teammates miserable. (usually when I feel one is being a real ass first and deserves to lose one or two games)

I really love all the comments about ages here. Sure, there's kids going about screaming "TESTICLES!" and "YOUR MOM!" and various less-savory phrases all over the place, but it's not everyone...I'm 14, and I have a lot of friends who play on Live, and out of 7 of us in my class, maybe one or two of us does it(and they annoy me, so I don't play online with them...)...? I'm with DPhunkT's idea, just make it so a certain amount of bad rep gives a temporary messaging/microphone ban, or maybe they could implement something like being able to send voicechat logs in with the complaints, Runescape used to have something like that where they'd send in the last minute of gameplay with complaint to prove what was wrong...

There will never, and I repeat, NEVER be a solution to stop people from offending others. Even if Microsoft were to create some kind of system that would magically filter the "annoying" from the "sane", the complaints wouldn't stop. The "sane" people would start to nit-pick on things the other "sane" players might do, eventually driving them to hate the players they thought they would be able to get along with. The "annoying" players or "trolls" would eventually, unnecessarily, get each other suspended/banned from XBL because of their inane chattering. The only way to create a friendly online (emphasis on "online") gaming environment is to either play with the volume down, or play single player.

What the heck happened to this thread?

I was away for a few hours and now it's become a blamefest.

some posters maybe right and there may or not be a specific group of people who do this, but we really can't tell until a system like this is put on trial and the statistics are tallied.

Either way if this is implemented out would really be intersted in the outcome and it may surprise a lot of people.

And reason why I said this is community effort and reptuation based it should reduce the chance of the voting system being abused as those with a bad rep already will have the ability to group vote taken away from them too!

I really think MS should trial this.

Lets see Microsoft hires people to play games and moderate them. Seriously that is all it takes i guarantee that one person playing COD4 or Halo 3 will suspend well over 150 people each day. That will make people more cautious about what they say.. I know it wont happen but the whole filing complaints against each other is not working. People just keep abusing it non-stop.

the thing that would make this work is that enough complaints are leveled against someone, about 5 (in one match of more), the audio files are sent to microsoft were employees review the complaints. this would also work with messages in about the same way. the victim would mark a message with a complaint and goes against the sender. if enough complaints are leveled against the sender, the messages would be sent to microsoft so employees can review them. and if people place to many false charges, the can also get penalized. same goes for glitch exploits except video is sent. and the files are only saved if a complaint issued during a match. i think this is possible to do an don't know why it hasn't been done yet.

The sad part about it is that it's usually not kids but males in their early twenties.

It is true, not all kids are evil some can actually understand how to be assertive, i do not want to sound racist but 80-90% of the offensive people i have played with were americans males sounding of the early 20s, the annoying thing is the amount of racist slurs they make.

That's a very good idea!!

I think some part time moderators along with the added combination of the active community based voting system will help to identify and shut out constant known perps!!

They will be added to some sort of black list and it will display there known abuse reports or reputation before the start of any new game to give all other players a heads up and they will be given the option to shut out the player.
