usually what happens to me everytime i get an achievement is this 7 foot viking comes to my house and gives me a high-five, and then we draw pictures of krull. worth every second of it.
There's no purpose to achievement points other than to make you want to play more. It's all intertwined with downloading gamer pics from MS ( blah, blah, blah )....
The bottom line is, it's a marketing scheme for gamers to spend their cash points.
Not saying it's a bad thing. On the contrary, it good business sense.
I have about 1800 points, but I really don't care about them and don't go out of my way to get them. On the other hand, any time I do -do something to get one, I have to check right away to see how many points I got and what I did to get it. Go figure.
Its kind of just for fun and a marketing strategy by MS. I, for example, participate in another forum in which we have a ranking of all the posters and its really cool to see how much you advance every week(the ranking is updated weekly). Also, as Cliffy B said in an interview, they're pride points for some players.

You build up a score and list of achievements. Not a lot you can do then unless you want to brag. Shame they don't let you use the pictures earned from the achievements as gamer pictures.
not a whole lot... at first i really liked acheivements, but now I see them as pretty much pointless. Some games have really stupid acheivements or stupid amounts of acheivements that I couldn't care less about. A few games have something that is better than acheivements... rewards. Halo 3, Resistance, Heavenly Sword, and Warhawk all let you unlock special skins, armor, clothing, artwork, videos as you rank up or complete portions of the game. Also in Gears of War I like how when you beat the game on the hardest level you got a special gamer pict. I wish more games would do stuff like that like unlock themes, gamerpics, artwork, etc. instead of pointless points. They mean nothing. Rewards are MUCH better than acheivements.
I am extremly worried that people won't think I'm good at games so I rent/buy as many easy games as possible and pump up my Gamerscore to ridiculous levels thus making me feel better about myself. My gamerscore is the only thing I live for, without it I would be nothing.
Putting in acheivements was a brilliant idea.. I love them, not to brag about what I have but it adds so much replay value to the game.. I love when the Achievement Unlocked pop's up..

but there are achievements that are so ridiculous to get, most of them on GOW and the most absurd is the one "seriously" in which you have to kill 10,000+ on ranked matches, really ridiculous. but there are others that i dont even sweat to get them like the ones on footie games like Fifa, PES (winning eleven) and Halo 3 still a lot of fun, i dont even know and dont wanna know the Halo 3 achievements is more fun when you get them by surprise IMO. 8)

THe higher the number the more they play the 360 too much. I have had my 360 since launch and I only have 1166 points, half of them from PGR3.
It sorts out the people who have no lives and the people that have lives. It also sorts out the kids from the people with jobs and families.
Or you just suck and cant get any. I have a job and a family and I somehow manage to get the score I have today. And I had my 360 since last summer. I too have a job and a family, but playing a game on the 360 is my way to unwind. I guess I've needed to unwind quite a bit since getting the 360 in March. (see sig.) I like achievements because they give me something to work toward. I like being able to say that I earned all of my points. If nothing else, they'll tell you I got my money's worth. Another function of points not yet mentioned, they work wonders as Icebreakers if you are playing online. Check out someone's stats, maybe start a conversation about a game you're interested in, or a certain achievement.

WOW you should spend more time listening in english class rather than getting achievements.
