I actually feel the need to take a stand against Bioshock here. The developers claimed that it was a game where you could set a trap for an army of mutants using electrical wire, tornadoes, and a crazed Big Daddy. Then somehow they must have decided to make the game less fun. They held off all the weapons that you wanted until very late in the game, and by the time you finally got what you wanted, the situation you could have used it best in had already passed. When you finally get all weapons and abilities, the game takes you out of the hallways and clutter where you can kill enemies cleverly and just has you run through two identical wide-open maps where pretty much all you can do is hack the security bots, snipe, or go in for melee since there's virtually nowhere to hide. I will hand it to the devs that they crafted a great story and setting, but the poor endings sent the story down the drain. After I was done with Bioshock I felt like I had played a less-fun Deus Ex.
But onto the topic at hand, Halo 3, Mass Effect, and Assassin's Creed all blew me away this year. Halo 3 had the best cinematography and ending of any FPS I had ever heard of, in addition to the series' great gameplay. Mass Effect is just all around brilliant (screw technical glitches, Bioware games ALWAYS have tons!). And Assassin's Creed went above and beyond the call of duty in making a truly unique gameplay experience. The number of games that lived up to their hype this year is unbeleivable. If only Bioshock had been one of them.
[QUOTE="ERoBB"]did you say kane%Lynch wow that was the worse game of year good job palGames I think lived up to the hype: Heavenly Sword, Rock Band, Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4.
Games I think disappointed: Assassins Creed, Halo 3, Bioshock, Kane& Lynch.

Orange Box has yet to stop amazing me for as long as I've had it, so its a favorite of mine.
Bioshock (possibly better than the hype), Orange Box, Call Of Duty 4 (I didn't even care about this game when I heard about it, but it's REALLY frickin' good)...
Mass Effect is a really good game, but I think it falls just short of where it should've been. I love the game in spite of its flaws, but there's no denying that the game isn't as perfect as it could've been with maybe another quarter in the incubator.
IMO, Orange Box was the best of the year. Between playing through HL2, the episodes & Portal, its kept me happily busy for a lot longer than other games.
I played through Bioshock once (for thepoints) but have no desire to play thru it again. The enemy variety is lacking and the feel of the weapons is not there, although it is very pretty and well scripted.COD4 is good, but not great (I dont understand the hype either).
Sadly, nothing as good as Gears of War in 2007 .....
Orange box defiantly lived up to its hype, everyone of its games are better than CoD4 these warfare fps's are getting way too old.
Also Mass Effect lived up to its hype and Halo 3 was ok.
IMO: COD 4, Assassins Creed, Halo 3.
Bioshock didn't really do anything for me, and I still haven't played OB which I need too
cod4 and bioshock

[QUOTE="chefstubbies"]Bioshock has exceeed it's hype in my opinion.kotyk
agreed
Play systems shock 2 bioshock didn't live up to anything still a good game though
Cod4, ME,and orange box for me. Halo 3 didn't live up to the hyped but it did improve on halo2
Everything but halo 3 basically,H3 was nothing but HYPE IMO.
Iv liked the halo's BUT mass effect BLEW IT AWAY B4 I even started the first mission IMO LOL !,AWSUM GAME!,& im still playing it unlike the WAY TO SHORT H3.
Bioshock also BLEW H3 AWAY & even the orange box.
Condemend still stands out to me with its amazing graphics & loved its gameplay, condemned 2 will be completely MIND BLOWING!.
Hated splintercell:double agent, lost planet was pretty good.
Speaking of HYPE?!, gears of war was a big let down for me,it was good but not all it was hyped up to be,also i seen as much of the loading screen as i did the game = VERRY ANNOYING.
So besides the four that people keep saying, what else do you think lived up to the hype or exceeded them.
I thought the Darkness was incredibly fun. Splinter Cell Double Agent was a lot better than I thought it would be too.
