... It is not superior. It is simply another type of cable to transfer a signal to a television albeit in digital form. Component cables can transfer 1080p just like HDMI.

HDMI transmits video and audio signals in a pure digital form.

The biggest "benifit" will be to HD-DVD users.  eventually HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movies will have a copy protection known as HDCP.  Currently the only way decode and use disks using HDCP is by connecting the player to a TV via HDMI.   Currently none of the movie studios are implementing HDCP, that I know of.

High Definition Multimedia Interface. It transfers both audio and video in a single cable fully digital and uncompressed.

Am I to assume that The HDMI cable is specific to the HDMI port and will not be compatible with the current Xbox systems? and also if my tv is only 720p would HDMI even be neccessary because i read somewhere that HDMI is only for outputting 1080p for movie playback....

Actually it is superior... You just said it yourself. It transfers everything in a purely digital format as opposed to an analog signal (component cables). Digital>Analog

The HDMI cables will not work with current gen systems since the current Xbox 360s are only capable of outputting an analog signal (HDMI is digital). Also, HDMI is used for any HD source, so it would be good for 720p.
