What kind of game lets u completely skip over chunks of the game?

i was palying castlevania on the xbl arcade today, par usual, but i got stuck on a boss and decided to check out a walkthrough on gamefaqs

i was amazed to see that there were some whole parts of the game that i just compeletly skipped over. i DIDNT have to complete the parts, but i was supposed to.

the game just let be bypass like 3 bosses without even telling me

 are most of the castlevania games like this? ive only played the original, circle of the moon, and son

You can skip certain bosses in many of the Castlevania games, although it is often the case that by doing so you will fail to get a certain key item, so you will be unable to complete your quest...bowling-name
