While it depends on the title I'm playing, I prefer a steady diet of Electronic music, (not just TECHNO, experimental, ambient, trance, IDM, noise, etc.) I find the general lack of lyrics is perfect for gaming (as well as recreational listening- it's all I listen to anyway.)
Most recently I picked up on a band called Pluxus who's whole "thing" as an old-school NES, 8-bit sound. It's fun playing CoD4 or Halo-esque next-geness with a soundtrack reminicent of my '80s childhood.
Notables: Aphex Twin, Orbital, Autechre, FSOL, The Orb, Boards of Canada, Mu-ziq, pre-MTV Moby, etc.
Oh, and I found the perfect soundtrack for Assassin's Creed: Azam Ali's "Elysium for the Brave." It's got her eerie-yet-beautiful middle-eastern vocals with dark tones and heavy electronic elements. I burnt the whole CD to m Xbox and I let it play straight through the game.
sometimes i sing when i play and im so good at singing i dont need music
i also make the sound for the drums and guitars with my mouth at the same time
im very talented

Respect \m/
Been thinking of ripping Lifeforms and maybe some other FSOL to my HDD myself, to listen to while playing some of my "calmer" games :P Be nice if I had the big 120 GB drive, that way I could rip all of my dnb mixes for Forza 2, etc...
