Well in my opinion the last game with a truly good story was Fahrenheit (Indigo Child) for the first Xbox. It's on marketplace now for anyone who didn't know.
Since I beat Eternal Sonata AFTER Mass Effect. Technically, Eternal Sonata was the last game I played that had a great story.
But definitely Mass Effect had an epic story.
Also, on the Knights of the Old Republic story twist; that was such a huge curveball. That was incredible and brilliant. It made an already incredible story even better with that twist.
Got Lost Odyssey a few days ago and it is amazing, and shortly before that I got Devil May Cry 4 which was also pretty good but I think DMC3 beat it by far in the story department.
For Me It Would Have To Be Half-Life 2 just because i found it so engrossing and different. Call of Duty 4 was OK but its nothing we haven't seen in countless Hollywood blockbusters, I Thought the story of Halo 3 was OK, quite engrossing just a shame about the actual game!
well i just finished MGS 3, (i never got into it before, but now im shocked how i never liked it). The ending gave me chills, the best story in a game for me by far
