This. Mainly because the newer ones are much quieter. That or wait until people start dumping their 360s in the fall to upgrade.My recommendation would be buy a new one if you really want to ensure this won't happen again.

Well, if you want to eliminate the risk of RRoD, then I would recommend getting a new Xbox. I've been using the Slim for a few years now and I never had any overheating issues or RRoD scares.
At this point you're honestly better of just buying a whole new console, the newer slim models run a lot cooler and quieter and it isn't as prone to dying as the old models are. If you're really hard up for cash then just call up Microsoft to repair your current 360, but it's going to cost you like a $100, so it's your choice.
