I would personally love to see the trend of GTA games change, and a more realistic slant be taken on the game. I believe a "capo" style gameplay would be suited to the series, an example of this being the godfather (the game more than the movie). The side missions in the godfather were something GTA has always seemed to lack (in the godfather bank jobs were something you could repeat, whereby GTA it was a once off integrated within the story)
Imagine being able to take on a bank job, hire some "muscle", arm them to the teeth and ransack a bank and then if able to make a clean getaway requiring to launder the cash before it can be used (and your goons taking their cut afterwards).
Another thing GTA sorely needs is much more creative missions, the act of "chase this car and destroy it" or "chase this car and wait for it to stop before you kill guy X" gets tedious very quickly. Even the missions in san andreas were much more inventive, although being highly ficticious (I remember particularly burning that field for truth full of marajuana, and trying to escape in a 1950's volkswagon whilst being under "the influence" and fighting my way inside area 51 to find a jetpack and escape by flying through walkways filled with FBI).I believe this style could have been easily transfered to the new game, obviously with more realistic mission goals.
Obviously with this being a console based action game the rpg and simulation elements would have to be have to kept to a minimum to appease the gargantuan fan base, but i believe owning "turf", hiring gang members for protection, a more realistic take on weapons (handling, ammunition amounts etc) would be nothing but benificial to the new direction the series seems to be taking.
