I have decided to get a hdtv this christmas but I am not really sure which to decide on. I only need it to be like 19-24" considering I only sit like 2-4 feet away from it. Should I get a 1080 720p? What are some nice HD tvs I should know about?

if you're only getting up to 24" don't even bother looking at 1080p, I mean I don't know if they even make 1080p for screens that size. I assume you're getting an LCD screen and as far as what brand you should look at here's a rough generalization.
Sony, Samsung> LG, Toshiba, Sharp, Panasonic, JVC > Vizio, Westinghouse, Olevia
If you have the money I would try and avoid the bottom end (although I have heard good things about Vizio). I have a Toshiba Regza 32", got it in November 2007 and it's been awesome.
i have a 26 inch samsung tv with 1080 using component an the picture is very good. i would definitely go with samsung or panasonic.oscy54Samsung and Sharp are the best IMO.
heres a useful chart
a few other things to note: 720p is the native resolution of the Xbox 360, there is a difference between "interlace" (i) and progressive (p). Progressive scan is especially better than interlaced when dealing with fast moving images like video games which makes 720p better than 1080i when playing games.
I got a 40" 1080p Samsung LCD HDTV and that thing is great!
I would suggest getting anything that's 32 inches and higher even if you have wait a bit. The 1080p on anything that's less than 40 inches isn't worth it since you can't see the detail in the picture. The brand is really up to you since they can determine how much you spend on the TV. Also if you go to Best Buy or anything you don't need to pick up the extended warranty, mainly because I've seen them online to be purchased later if you just want the TV without spending another $300 and all that is commission anyway. Just make sure you pick up some HDMI cables with it since it is an uncompressed digital picture to make it look as good as possible.
Hey bro I highly suggest you get a Samsung 32" LCD HDTV 1080p. I mean it's beautiful man ! I enjoy gaming SO much more on it now. I'm pretty sure you've heard of Braid the famous xbla game, this game looks freakin' beautiful man, lol. Of coarse games such as COD and good RPGs like Eternal Sonata have very stunning visuals also.
As said before, I highly suggest you get yourself a 32" Samsung, not to big, not to small, just perfect ;)
edit- Just thought i'd throw in the price for ya. The 32" samsung cost me roughly $750. There was a Insigmia (spell check?) for the same price that was a 50" right by the 32" samsung and the visuals on the samsung just blew the Insigmia out the frame!
