I've never been a big fan of Rockstar so i couldn't get into Red Dead or GTA (even though they've always gotten so much praise). I love the Mass Effect games, although more for the story, i don't think i could replay the 1st game, the mechanics annoyed me. I think Fallout and Oblivion are up there though, I've heard it's easy to put a good 200+ hours into either game. Either Bioshock can be fun to replay. Also i've invested a ridiculous amount of time in Mirror's Edge Considering it has a 2 hour story, trying to master all the time trials can really eat up your time!
Technically, multiplayer is one of the aspects that can give incentive to keep playing a game. However, any online game's servers will inevitably go down someday, so (IMO) a game's true replay value is how much fun you can have with it offline. i.e. a damn good campaign. Personally, I prefer short-but-sweet games over the typical "10 hours of mediocrity" campaigns of today (example: CAWA DOODY). Replayed games like Viewtiful Joe, Zone of the Enders 2, Vanquish, and Sin & Punishment: Star Successor a bunch of times, and they're just 3-4 hours if you're doing it right. The key lies within creating a "rollercoaster ride" of memorable set-piece battles, unique boss fights, a tight control scheme to make the most of solid gameplay mechanics, and (for those days where you just want to get down to the action) skippable cutscenes. (though some badarse, over-the-top and/or hilarious cutscenes to keep you pumped certainly can't hurt; see Devil May Cry, God Hand, and Bayonetta) Multiplayer's nice and all, but I think too many games fall back on it like a crutch for replayability these days. To stand the test of time, a game will need a memorable, fun single-player mode that doesn't get old fast.I have a question for you guys. What do we actually mean when we say "replay value"? Are we talking about just replaying campaigns? Or multiplayer? And is multiplayer technically "replaying" anyway? I'm just confused.
