After they published that blu-ray is winning the format war 2:1?
who would buy a hd-dvd player period?
People who don't know that Blu-Ray is winning. There are TONS of uninformed gamers out there, for example one time at Bestbuy I was talking with this one guy who thought unless he bought the universal remote for his 360 that he couldn't watch DVD's on his console cause his friend at work said using the controller doesn't work lol, I told him otherwise though Scarface_tm431
truth.
but who would spend that time of $ without SOME type of research?
Show us the 2:1, those numbers are always exagerated the by a big release on either format skewing the numbers for a short time. It fluctuates. And the war has just began, tip of the ice burg, the sale on either side is still way too small compared to the DVD market, so the main consumers haven't decided. And with the PS3 being blu-ray it may have given them a artificial boost since that's going to be a moot point eventually when cheaper players come out as most of the regular consumers are not going to look at a $500 player. Instead, when both formats get into that $100 range then we'll see what happens. Right now HD-DVD is getting close at $299, which is about the price of a good upscaler anyway. But still at that price most people won't care enough to pay that much yet.
If I didn't already havea PS3 or a Toshiba HD-A1 $500 HD-DVD player, I'd probably have a HD-DVD add-on by now since it's so cheap at $180 with a free movie and 5 by mail. Even if it loses the format war you'd have got great use out of it for over a year or 2. But I wouldn't buy another one right now at $500 like I did over a year ago before blu-ray was even out. I was even disgusted with blu-ray that launched with a $1000 player and all the initial releases were horrible quality compared to what HD-DVD had been delivering for a couple months at half the price. Things have leveled out. in terms of quality, but Blu-ray still needs to get interactive stuff going, which has delayed many releases and why say the movie 300 has tons more features on HD-DVD than the blu-ray vesion.
eh, i think it's quite a waste to get a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player. as long as it's on DVD and i'm able to see the movie ya know...it's pretty simple. KGB32
This reminds me of my roommate. I have a 65inch 1080p DLP screen and a $3000 sound system and with it free to use she'd end up watching her dvd rentals in her bedroom on a 20inch $89 Target SD tv. I guess why waste time with big screen and 5.1 surround sound if you got your SD tv, it's pretty simple, you still gonna see the movie ya know. :)

Maybe if something should happen to it she doesn't want to get blamed for it.. Just a thought

I have a Harmony remote, one button turns everything on, the tv and correct input, receiver and correct input, and dvd player. And the one remote controls the volume of the reciever and playback of the player all at once. Now I wouldn't just let anyone play a Nintendo Wii in front of the 65inch screen without me being their to make sure someone doesn't put a hole in it :)
Okay, to get this out there HD movies are rated as higher and are higher quality than Blu-ray movies (atleast for now). I know this because I used to be a TV salesman and I would be required to look up dozens of reviews on both formats. Also, hd-dvd is much more affordable for many people. One thing that you should keep in mind is that every format that sony has brought to the market has ultimately failed, most notably hi-8 and a few other formats, just look it up on wikipedia.
Personally, I believe that Blu-ray and Hd-dvd will co-exist with each other as players that are capable of playing both formats have already released. If I were to choose in getting a high definition player I would definately go with an HD-dvd player for its superior quality and for its price.
hope this helps someone
I bought one and I have Blu Ray. I use my HD-DVD player more because not all the movies for it are garbage. I have Troy, The matrix, HOT FUZZ and a bunch of other ones you cant get on Blu Ray. Most of the Blu Ray content is Pixar kids movies and Superhero movies. I'm sorry but the fantastic four movie was crap. Putting it in HD just makes it pretty crap. Id have a hard time recommending either format until more High Quality movies come out. For now I'm sticking with regular DVD.mrb45Are you kidding? Jessica Alba in her underwear in HD!

Yea, every format they brought to market, like the CD, 3.5" floppy disks, and DVD. Sure they've made formats that failed, but that's the cost of doing business in the tech industry. I don't now about hddvd being "higher and higher quality" since blu-ray is technically superior to hddvd in nearly every category (storage capacity, audio and video codec performance, and audio/video/raw data bitrates).
the add on is a waste of money, you could just buy the hardrive for 190$ and MS points for 20$, and download 6 full length HD movies from XBL. whereas the add on costs 190$ and just one HD movie costs around 25 bucks, so you're already overpaying if you buy the add on and one HD movieascendentjustic
First, Xbox HD rentals are 720p, half that of HD-DVD at 1080p.
2nd, Xbox rentals suffer from compression issues, while HD-DVD stays picture perfect every frame.
3rd, Most HD rentals are 6 bucks, that's about $30-$36 for 6 movies, and you have to watch them within two weeks and then only 24hrs after you start watching one. While with an Add-on, you can then sign up to Netflix or Blockbuster and you'd be renting HD-DVDs movies and DVDs cheaper and all the time in the world to watch them.

you cant keep the donwloads on xbox live. Once you watch them they are gone. My hd dvds will be around for ever because they are hard copys and dont get disc rot like blu ray discs.

$180 for the add-on VS $300 minimum for a stand-alone Blu-Ray.
I still would buy it after hearing that news. I mean, it was cheap at $200 for what it is, it has gotten cheaper, and there are tons more quality movies coming out for it. They might be getting beat in sales, but just because they're losing doesn't mean the format dies.
Most gamers are going to buy a PS3, myself included, and this is just a cheaper solution until I do buy a PS3 and have a Blu-Ray player.

there are no 300 dollar blu ray players and all the older blu ray players that people bought for a THOUSAND DOLLARS are obsolete and cannot tak eadvantage of any special features on most upcoming discs. Thank sony for that. 300 is a perfect example. The blu ray 300 has crap special features while the hd dvd 300 has many more extra features that the blu ray disc simply cant handle.

Because they arent getting "pwnd"
Even if the 2:1 ratio was true it is still meaningless given that both formats combined still havent broken 1% of all movie sales. Which means they are still competing for the other 99% of the market. HD will only be "pwnd" if BR takes at least 51% of the entire market not the pathetic little 1% slice they are currently bragging about. In the past things like best quality didnt matter when determining who wins a format war. Its who markets it the best that wins every time and besides, you will be very hard pressed to notice a difference between a HD & BR movie despite the minor improvements BR offers.
After they published that blu-ray is winning the format war 2:1?First of all, who is this "they" that you are referring to, and where are the numbers suggesting that BluRay is outselling HD-DVD?who would buy a hd-dvd player period?cokessweet7777
Of what I have read, the total global adoption still favors HD-DVD currently. In the EU sector of countries, HD-DVD is dominating thanks in large part to the "stillborn fetus" maneuver Sony pulled by delaying and price-hiking the PS3 over there.
In my case, the HD-DVD add-on drive would be particularly convenient. I wouldn't have to buy another, bigger switch to add in another display (to use component video for the HD-DVD player), or buy a new (HD)TV to be able to connect basically just that. And most have reported being able to play HD-DVD movies very easily with the 360 add-on drive in Windows; MacOS support is iffy (since Apple is supposed to be allied with BluRay).
And even if BluRay were to win decidedly, I can still have that drive available to read/rip HD-DVD's and then re-burn them onto a BluRay disc.
Not to mention, a lot of the movies I would more likely want in high-definition are either on both formats, or on HD-DVD only (the Matrix trilogy).
What makes me really want to get the add-on drive is the fact that 300 on HD-DVD is superior to 300 on BluRay.
