The information below and what it is about IS the sole reason I DONT LIKE BLU RAY. It will suck when blu ray becomes the standard and then everyone starts complaining about how they wish they could back up their movies and do other things like put them on personal media devices. But YOU WONT BE ABLE TO. SONY IS A **** COMPANY WHO IS TRYING TO FORCE ITS DRM (digital rights management) BULL**** INTO EVERY CORNER OF THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY. Its been one thing after another most recently: HDMI and NOW BLU RAY. THIS IS BAD FOR US CONSUMERS but noone will realize it until its too late. I am well aware Sony is not soley responsible for coming up with blu ray but the fact is it wouldnt even be competing with hddvd if they hadnt put it in their PS3. They knew this would cause a spike in blu ray support and movies bought.

discuss

blu ray is evil and "anti consumer" - bill gates

Advanced Access Content System (AACS) is a standard for content distribution and digital rights management. It is developed by AACS Licensing Administrator, LLC (AACS LA), a consortium that includes Disney, Intel, Microsoft, Matsu****a (Panasonic), Warner Bros., IBM, Toshiba and Sony.

Since appearing in devices in 2006, several successful attacks have been made on the format. The first known attack relied on the trusted client problem. In addition, decryption keys have been extracted from a weakly protected player (WinDVD). However, even though some AACS cryptographic keys have been compromised, new releases will use new, uncompromised keys.[citation needed]

BD+ was developed by Cryptography Research Inc. and is based on their concept of Self-Protecting Digital Content.[54] BD+ is effectively a small virtual machine embedded in authorized players. It allows content providers to include executable programs on Blu-ray Discs. Such programs can:[52]

  • examine the host environment, to see if the player has been tampered with. Every licensed playback device manufacturer must provide the BD+ licensing authority with memory footprints that identify their devices.
  • verify that the player's keys have not been changed.
  • execute native code, possibly to patch an otherwise insecure system.
  • transform the audio and video output. Parts of the content will not be viewable without letting the BD+-program unscramble it.

If a playback device manufacturer finds that its devices have been hacked, it can potentially release BD+-code that detects and circumvents the vulnerability. These programs can then be included in all new content releases.

The specifications of the BD+ virtual machine are only available to licensed device manufacturers. A list of licensed adopters is available from the BD+ website.

BD+ was made available for content publishers in June 2007.[55] The first titles using BD+ were released in October the same year. Several players had problems playing back those titles.[56] BD+ has been circumvented by the developers of the program AnyDVD as of version 6.1.9.6 beta.[57]

BD-ROM Mark is a small amount of cryptographical data that is stored physically differently from normal Blu-ray Disc data. Bit-by-bit copies that do not replicate the BD-ROM Mark are impossible to decode. A specially licensed piece of hardware is required to insert the ROM-mark into the media during replication. Through licensing of the special hardware element, the BDA believes that it can eliminate the possibility of mass producing BD-ROMs without authorization.

When the first AACS keys were leaked, some Blu-ray titles became available on file-sharing networks. There is also a commercial PC software player (AnyDVD HD) that allowed users to watch Blu-ray Disc movies on non-HDCP compliant PC hardware or copy them.

Hes talking about making a backup so the original doesn't get messed up. Anyways, there will always be a way around any protection.

The protective layer on the Blu Ray disc is significantly improved from previous incarnations. You have to actually try top scratch them. As long as you are careful just like you were with DVDs, you won;t have that problem

no thats not why i dislike it. I actually like to backup my movies after i legally PAY for them. I also enjoy using them on laptops and personal media players and things like that. This WONT be possible with blu ray because of the protection they are attempting to use. Compatibility will be sparse and it just wont be a reasonable option for people like me who want do other things besides JUST view them in my blu ray player that cost to much in the first place.

no, its not the same type of copy protection that the makers of blu ray are proposing. blu ray not only wants you to buy only their product, THEY ALSO WANT TO CONTROL HOW YOU USE IT. In my case thats limiting me from doing perfectly legal things.

Both HDDVD and BD use the same base protection (which has been cracked), BD adds an optional extra layer (which has also been cracked). As for the HDMI thing, forcing customers to use quality HD cables to get the picture isnt a bad thing, its a good thing, and HDCP has also been cracked. None of its standing in the way.

In what way does this make the 360 better? Im not being sarcastic or the like, just wondering does this give 360 an advantage in some way.

yes you right. it has been cracked. but new movies will be coming out with new keys that will be harder to crack. they will continuely do this and its bigger than just the fact that the protection has been hacked and the keys in general. Its about the fact that the makers of blu ray are so strict about right management and what you can do with the MEDIA you pay its rediculous.

And sure HDMI is great for quality picture. buts its the fact they are "forcing customers to use it". there just really isnt an alternative. And HDMI itself has its own DRM system. Just check out some of these links:

He is bashing on Sony (blu ray) and explaining why the 360's HD DVD is better because it allows videos to be suplicated.

excuse you. do you actually read threads or just go blindly posting?

This is very relevant to xbox 360 owners. And i never said a word about the 360 being better than the PS3. I think the PS3 is great other than blu ray.

Need I really read past that? And I could care less about what your point is, because it was way too long. I skimmed over your post and its just complaining about Blu Ray. In what way does this concern 360 users?

And on a side note, blu ray is the only thing keeping the PS3 alive. Its game library sucks so if its games and blu ray are terrible then how is the PS3 "great"?

I still dont see how the inability (ability but tricky) to rip a blu-ray disc gives ps3 a disadvantage. You aren't going to backup or copy games with a ps3. As for the 360, MS may support Hd-dvd now but I cant see why they couldnt release a Blu-ray addon drive if the format becomes more successful. The type of disk doesnt give any advantage in games. This is a more off-topic thread imo.

Maybe you should read past that before you say something that makes you look like an ediot. If your not going to bother and even read it and get the point you might as well have said "i dont like to read long paragraphs... and i like to be a prick I think that wouldve been more useful.

And its relavent because 360 owners have hddvd and should hope that it wins in this format war. And blu rays DRM is the best reason i see to support hddvd.

have a nice day! :)

I did not read past that part because I don't care about what you are saying. I care to play games, not feel insecure about what video format is better. Like you said this apart of the format war, therefore it belongs in the system wars forum.
