Why did treyarch use the cod 4 engine to build black ops? .....i recently looked up the engine they used and now it all makes sense ..the graphics, the gameplay, the sound are all worse than that of MW2 and to top it all off they used the older engine to build the game even though at the time the new IW 4 engine was out :x...now i'm stuck with this purchase till Bc3 comes out

Probably for a faster development time. Building a new engine would have taken time, something Activision doesn't like.

the majority of the code is still from cod2, actually. :P cod4 came with an advancement in some graphical features, but it pretty much ends there.

No they didn't. WaW used the IW3 engine and MW2 used IW4. Black Ops used a lightly modified IW3 eninge.

They still have code from Quake 2 in there somewhere. I can't believe they haven't just built a new engine yet.

Activision probably backburnered a new engine because no one has really challenged the series. They have practically been minting money off the CoD series.

And now they are using the MW2 engine for MW3...which I guess means they are using the WaW engine for MW3. Wow

Nope... WaW and MW2 did not use the same engine. That post was incorrect. WaW was build off of the CoD4 engine, then IW used a new engine for MW2, Treyarch again built their game off of CoD 4 engine for BOps, and, to be honest, I'm not sure what MW3 is using, but at the very least it's the MW2 engine, which is a newer engine than the one used for CoD4, WaW, and BOps.

Because when development on Black Ops started after World at War, MW2 was already in development with the new engine, and Treyarch didn't know about it.

Waste time and money working on a new engine when you can churn out the same game and still make a billion dollars week 1?

Even though black ops is using the same engine as cod4, cod4 still looks and runs quite a bit better imo. im really looking forward to what the old IW guys are doing over at Respawn.

They had to, they said there was no way they could use the newer MW2 engine and still include theater mode, so i wonder how many people will be disapointed when MW3 uses the newer engine and does not have theater mode.

No, it didnt, MW2 was made on a newer updated, built from the ground up version of the WAW engine
