I've never had an instance where a store was out of the game i wanted. The only time there was even a SLIGHT chance was when Halo 3 came out and even then i still got it. I see my friends pre order games such as Madden and i cant help but think to myself why... Why do you guys pre order games?

Generally just to get exclusive stuff. I pre-ordered Reach because the Legendary edition was gonna be pretty rare this time around, so yeah.

There's usually some kind of incentive, like a gift card, or free DLC item. Or both.

MY brother wanted a game and after searching at four store he found it. I do not want to do that. The limited edition is a reason. I just want to make sure I get it.

Before this console generation with all of the pre-order bonuses, there wasn't really any need to pre-order games. That said, I've pre-ordered countless games since Ocarina of Time simply for ease of mind. I don't mind putting down 5 bucks or whatever to ensure myself a copy and knowing that I won't have to run around town trying to secure a copy. It's even better now with Amazon Prime and the usual pre-order credit. I can only recall a few times in the past 10+ years where pre-ordering was actually necessary for me to get the game lol.

lol stupid bonus that should be given to everyone in first place...

and besides that only reason i can see preordering games is big tittles and your not going be able buy the game late that night/next day...and not taking a chance driving to 5 store other games what a joke...

also place offer rebates when you pre order specialy amozon

now i did buy halo reach already because it can be on my august bill so i can get out of the way. plus 0% chance of sell out even though i be walking across the street to best buy on my lunch break so i can go straight home when i lock out

now few years ago i would see it was pointless because you didn't get nothing besides the fact you get a copy

I pre-ordered Reach because I want it first day and I know I won't find it anywhere unless I pre-order. Also I like how I can pay for the game and get it over with then just pick it up in the store.

A: Pre-order bonuses.
B: To make sure they actually get the game.

While A is a lot more popular, a lot of people choose B with games that are lesser known, where stores might not receive shipments if they games aren't popular enough.

Pre-ordering online quite often leads to the game arriving the day before release in shops and saves me having to fanny about after work going to town to pick up a copy!

I can agree with your thought. However, I pre-order games on Amazon when they offer a $20 giftcard. Since I order there a lot (free shipping, no taxes, lower prices), it's a fantastic deal. I think I've heard Wal-mart doing something similar recently, but I'm not sure. I prefer to avoid wal-marts.

Just to ensure I get my copy on release day, or if its a collectors edition. I only pre-order if I know for a fact the game will be sold out first day. A la Black Ops and Reach.

A bonus and if I usually order a standard edition I get it a day early and it comes in the post so I dont have to drive for an hour in a round trip to be served by some rude student who hates the thought of work!

The pre order bonus. It's pretty much a staple now. I usually reserve the games that give us in-game costumes and such.

  1. Always preorder Atlus games because they are a limited pressing.
  2. Get free stuff, after all I am going to get the game anyways.
  3. No wait.
  4. Pre-pay, I have the money now and might as well get it out of the way.
  5. I've gotten discounts before because I pre-ordered.
  6. Free stuff
  7. Midnight release parties.
  8. Free stuff
  9. Fan loyalty
  10. Free stuff

And did I mention you get free stuff for a game you would be getting anyways? 'Cause you do.

Well, since Halo 2, I have pre ordered the limited editions. It has, I guess, become a tradition. Halo is the only game I pre order.

- Pre-order bonuses, usually extra costumes and the like.

- Other incentives like gift cards.

- Limited editions.

- To make sure they actually get the game.

If there's a sale where the pre-order is cheaper than the game will be on release, that's the only reason I would.

I generally don't pre-order anything because too many games that look like they'll be great when they're released end up being terrible. I always wait to see if a game is a flop or rent it first, unless it's something like Halo or GTA that I know for certain will be great.

Bonus stuff, special editions, for the average Halo and CoD fan, no, they will never need to preorder to get their game in but for fans of more obscure titles they will need to preorder (especially if they are in smaller town, I have lived in bigger towns and there was still three times where I was the only reason they got a copy of the game in), a lot of websites and stores (Amazon, Best Buy, Wal-Mart) give you discounts or gift cards for preordering, and they call you to tell you when it is in so you remember and sometimes stores don't get the games in until a day or two after the date sites post.

Someone else said fan loyalty, I guess that too, especially for more obscure games. Preordering also costs no extra money and for stores it can be canceled even after the game comes out.

1. If it's at gamespot they usually have some cool bonus (in-game, or some collectible),

2. Gamespot allows you to put any amount you want on a game and apply more over time, so if you preorder well ahead of time, you can purchase the game over a couple months so it's not a huge shock to your wallet when the game comes out. (Currently doing this with Fable III, and fallout new vegas.)

Where do you live? Gamespot, Best Buy, and Gamecrazy (when they were still open) just take the $5-$20 that you need to preorder the game (5-20 depending on the cost of the game, more for more expensive special editions) and take that off the price when you buy it. I don't know about Best Buy but you could even cancel your preorders days/weeks/years later at Gamestop and Gamecrazy and get your money back.

if pre-ordering was free then everyone would do it....it costs $3 at eb-games

That's obviously not true since it doesn't cost anything at the stores I already mentioned. (not true that everyone would do it, I have no idea where you live or why they are charging $3)
