well i made a topic not so long ago about dissapointed games and about 6 people mentioned oblivion

That's a pretty intelligent discussion regarding the flaws of Oblivion.
I didnt hate that game i actualy thought it was one of the best games (its not better than Halo 3 though lol)
It's like a watered down version of Morrowind. I love Oblivion but it's nothing compared to Morrowind. They made it a lot more casual and unlike Morrowind it didn't really seem like an epic adventure. Just follow the cursor over here then over there kinda game. craigalan23
Pretty much my thoughts. It's the most watered down/simplified RPG in Bethesda history. They sold out and screwed the hardcore Elder Scrolls fans. It was made for those who never played previous Elder Scrolls games, or those who hated Morrowind. Overall Bethesda is a business, and they are in it for the money now. Beyond their watered down game, what upsets me the most is how they charge for simple mods. The ONLY reason the Elder Scrolls series has lasted this long is because of their fan based content. On the PC version they released an SDK for fans to keep making mods, problem is the fans were forced to *fix* the game before they could get started on real content.
RIP Bethesda.... I can't even begin to imagine how bad they're going to screw over the Fallout fans.

The absolutely atrocious combat system keeps turning me away from Morrowind.

The PC version has *plenty* of mods that improve the combat. Including combat while mounted on a horse (Oh, there are horse mods too :P )

And seeing has I have only played the Xbox version, we have a little problem :)
For some reason it never hit me to buy the game for the PC. Well, looks like I have something to pick up this weekend.

You won't find many console gamers who disliked it because I think Bethesda purposely catered to that audience with this game. A lot of PC gamers would share the thought that it was at least a bit of a disappointment though.

exactly, i love oblivion.. but it wasnt a challange. i remember in Morrowind you could go in a dungeon and you might find an easy enough monster, and you might find something EXTREMELY HARD. and like you stated the quests in oblivion are just too easy compared to Morrowin.
1. First person melee combat. A melee function is great in shooters, but having it as your primary means of dispatching an enemy? Doesn't work for everybody.
2. It's just too. damn. much. The game is massive. For some people, this is a glorious treasure trove of things to experience and enjoy. For others it's like ordering a beer and being served the ocean. The entire ocean.
Great game, but it's not for everybody. I personally got about an hour in before being overwhelmed and walking away.
i hated it because....
loading times, felt lonely, auto leveling (same as in mass effect, which i like, but i hate auto lvl systems), stupid npcs.

btw... a high and mighty critic....gave perfect dark zero a 9 on this site...yea...that game sucks...who cares what critics say, its all opinon
Overwhelming? since when does that fit a game? its like saying a hooker overwhelmed you, i've been playing it for 270 hours, and i love it.
I absolutely loved the game. My best experience on the 360 so far. (i'm also strictly a consoel gamer and never played Morrowind)
Here's my review if your interested.
I didnt hate it at all. just thought it was kinda bland. reason:
I'm new to the ES games but I thought the combat was too boring. I made a "warrior" like char and hack and slashing got boring even after I turned to using bows and arrows(which were kinda fun). I also thought the leveling sys was HORRIBLE. on top of trying to keep up w/ the game and everything, I gotta also try to effectively level up. come on. I have to plan out levels? when'd that happen?
but please, despite these flaws imo, I thought it was still at least better than average. world was beautiful at least. =D
I loved this game, so much so that i bought Morrowind shortly afterwards just to check it out, & let me tell you, DO NOT play Morrowind if you have already played Oblivion, i played it for about 10 minutes & i just couldnt get past the bugs and clunky visuals, i really wish that i played Morrowind when it came out, i probably wouldve really enjoyed it (and yes graphics are important to me, so dont give me that blah blah blah about if the story's good who cares...)steveslugga
Get it for PC (yes you can run it) There are graphics mods.
Why do some people hate sports games? Same reason really. I grew up on JRPG's, and find Western RPG's generally unappealing.
Why do some people hate bumped threads?
What is with Oblivion and bumped threads lately? This is the third one in the last few days. When I saw this on the front page here, I seriously thought, "I bet this is another bumped Oblivion thread." It was.
Oh, and on topic: Oblivion is a fun game, and I've put a lot of hours into it. However, it's role-playingis very shallow, and the obvious scaling screws up the hack-n-slash aspect.

Bingo. Also, I tried it on 360, and I found out I can't enjoy Oblivion without playing on PC and loading it up with a billion mods. It's just an overall bland game. Feels like they released it beta stage.

I didn't even notice the age of the thread.
270 hours? Sorry to hear that. What a waste. Watch paint dry, its more fun.Overwhelming? since when does that fit a game? its like saying a hooker overwhelmed you, i've been playing it for 270 hours, and i love it.

From what i know, the haters usually say:
- It's too short/low in content compared to Morrowind. (I haven't played Morrowind yet btw).
- It's too long/confusing/ect.
- They don't like open world and/or WRPG's.
I liked Oblivion just fine. I liked the different types of quests, the different enemy types, and I loved creating spells. The world was a great size. There is fast traveling
I do hope though that when they make another Elder Srcolls game you can have more interaction with NPCs and my only grip was the actual oblivion doors being very similar to each other. But have to keep in mind that the game has been out for a while. Many games are easier to dissect when they have a few years under it's belt
I have noticed in system wars that a lot of people were dissapointed or hated Oblivion, claiming that the game did nothing new with the franchize and that the game was just an overall dissapointment. I would have to dissagree on that bcause to this day I still play the game, why do you think so many people dont like it?link-a-link
Because they're losers.
Because they've been wooed by newer RPG releases that have expanded on Oblivion's ideas and because of that they think they can hate on it and seem to be cool just because Oblivion is ridiculously well-received with the Gaming Press and the Gaming Community at large.
I don't see how anybody could hate it. It was the first game that made me think... This is why I upgraded my console and tv!!!
The gameplay and graphics just blew me away!
I played oblivion for about 15ours. But the game sucks.
To many portals
The world is to big, if you dont have the black horse you are doomed.
The game is slow, takes a long time before the action starts, and the action is over soon.
You have been bitten by a vampire --> realistic but cmon i can trow away this char.
It is a first persone fighting game, i want to see my gear.
There where to many story's and missions.
For the 15ours I played the game, it was do-able.
Good game, but good grades doesn't make it a GOOD game, but a BETTER game

Did you ever play Morrowind? Most of the negativity regarding Oblivion has to do with fans of Morrowind anticipating Oblivion - and Oblivion fell massively short of expecations. The game is appealing to gamers who haven't played Morrowind because they think they are getting into some massive epic game, when in reality it pales in comparison to Morrowind in almost ever imaginable way possible except for Oblivion's new action elements.
I can understand the game has flaws, but to *hate* it? I think thats taking it too far, even if you are of the opinion that its just a 'watered down' Morrowind.
I'd say its understandable if you're not into RPG's or something, but its really hard to deny that its a quality game and definitely worth playing.
