The game is appealing to gamers who haven't played Morrowind because they think they are getting into some massive epic game, when in reality it pales in comparison to Morrowind in almost ever imaginable way possible except for Oblivion's new action elements.

KHAndAnime

So because there's another game that *some* of you think is better, it makes Oblivion crap?

Is a BMW M3 'crap' because a Ferrari is better?

Even if you're not as happy with it as you were Morrowind, I'd definitely say its still worth playing.

I like middle ages themed games, books, movies, cartoons... and I didn't like Oblivion! I dont know why, but it just didnt feel right to me. I loved Fallout 3 however, and it uses the same engine - well its basically oblivion's twin brother so I cant blaim the gameplay. One thing I did like ware the horses :) As a middle ages themed game I really loved Fable II, maybe because it was simple and funny.

My rpg background pre-Oblivion: Chrono Trigger, Pokemon, KOTOR, KOTOR2, Golden Sun, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, Eternal Sonata, Fallout 3, Lost Odyssey.

Reasons I dislike Oblivion:

  • The main story seemed like it didn't matter in the overall scope of the game.
  • Alot of things I consider to be norms in RPGs aren't there. I remember closing my first Oblivion gate and the entire thing was 100% dungeon with no story at all. In most RPGs a dungeon that long would end with a boss fight that's got dialog and some deeper part of the story happens.
  • I thought the quests were boring overall.
  • The interface is crappy compared to most other RPGs i've played.
  • The characters were boring.

The only things I liked was that it was open world, but that only stays cool for so long, and the guilds were done better than most other RPGs i've played do stuff like that.

Based off of the history of RPGs i've played, i've come to expect strong story telling and characters from an RPG. That's the primary thing i'm looking for from the genre. If that's weak, it takes a really great battle system and well done leveling system to make up for it. Fallout 3 and Pokemon are the only RPGs i've played that had a battle and leveling system good enough to make up for my issues with the story/characters.

I think many people didn't like it because they didn't invest enough time in it. I feel a lot of RPGs require a lot of time to fully understand a game. I spent over 100 hours in Oblivion and I still have yet to beat it. Great game though.

why do so many people hate halo? why do so many people hate WoW? If you just look at the amount of people who hate halo, wow,or oblivion yea it seems like a hated game. But compare that number to the amount of people who love it and those haters fall into the 1 percentile.

Anything that is successful will get plenty of hate. There are plenty of things that people don't care for but as soon as it's critically acclaimed they "hate" it. Another example of this is Halo games. If it was just another game nobody would hate it or even think that it's such a terrible game that some claim that it is. But because it is Halo and is known to all, suddenly people that don't care about or just don't play it now hate it. When the original Xbox launched I never heard a single person say Halo was a bad game but after it became as massive as it is today people started to hate. Get what I'm trying to say?

I don't hate the game, I just don't like it.

Think everything about the combat was terrible, it had some stuff that I liked though, like the guilds.

Also, it just didn't feel very polished to me. I can kind of see why people like it so much, but it didn't do anything for me.

I disliked it and Morrowind for being soulless, unengaging and boring. I didn't really like the combat system at all and the game as a whole felt as though it lacked any sort of personality.

I dont know, I have played Oblivion a lot, and I would say its one of the best RPG's of all time. But it is not best in the Elder Scrolls series. That may be why a few people hate Oblivion.

I think alot of hardcore Elder Scrolls fans were disapointed because it simplified alot of the game to make it more user friendly. but everyone I know who jumped into the ES series at 4 (Oblivion), myself included, liked it. (actually I played 3, Morrowind,, and would rank 4 as better)

Oblivion was a great game, the only thing I disliked was that you spent most of your time in bloody caves, I knew to expect caves in a game like this, I just didn't expect them to be such a chore to travel through, heres hoping that Elder Scrolls V will focus more on exploring the world rather than just it's caves.

Perhaps they hate it because they are entitled to their own opinion. they don't necessarily have to agree with what you think about a game, and maybe it just wasn't their game.

They hate it because it is not as awesome and epic as Morrowind. Personally i like it more than Morrowind but i know if i played it back in the day it would have been so much better but i just seem to awful at navigating without a compass to guide me to my objectives.

i used to hate it but then i picked it up again recently and loved it. but i havent even come close to finishing it. it ended up becoming left out because of MW2 and all the rest of the games i now play online. i love xbox live now i have it but i dont play single player as much now. i cant remember why i hated it. i think i didnt like the combat and it felt too slow and clunky but i learnt to like it for what it is. and i decided to pick it up again after playing fallout 3 which was awesome so i got used to the controls and stuff

I love Oblivion, don't play it as much any more, I mean to but the damn thing doesn't recognise that the expansion pack is actually on my HD. Some people don't like it but those are mostly people who can't understand it.

I thought it was a good game, but when compared to the older Elderscrolls games, its not as good.

I personally liked Daggerfall and Morrowind alot more. Doesnt mean Oblivion sucks, but its just that Oblivion is not near the best in the series for me personally.

The only thing that Oblivion did better then Daggerfall and Morrowind is the graphics.

Morrowind/Daggerfall = better game world, doenst hold you hand, better story, more missions, more variety, better leveling, better monsters, better characters and much more fun to me personally.

I actually think the game was a huge improvement over Morrowind. The combat is FAR more fun and polished in Oblivion. The only 2 legitimate complaints are that the OPTIONAL caves/dungeons all pretty much look the same, and the scaleable leveling made many people mad.

TL;DR version: gameplay and game design flaws, coupled with a near total lack of direction once you're out of that initial dungeon, made Oblivion incredibly boring and unplayable for me, even when I was able to run it on my PC with full graphics. Detailed Version: I wasn't really expecting much, since I too got bored out of my mind with Morrowind as well, a game that I only have/had because I got it packaged in for free with some hardware I'd bought at the time. Even so, what things I already didn't like about Morrowind were only magnified further with Oblivion. I can understand having different ways to grind/level up skills separately from your experience, so that you can specialize on certain abilities. However, how slowly it took to build up a stat in ANY skill, even one that was supposedly favored by what class you chose to play as for the rest of the game took so incredibly long. Purposely pissing off a royal guard and basically holding the shield/block button for several hours while they pounded away at you with their swords to build up even half of the points you wanted to in those respective traits, and nothing else able to be done during then, is completely stupid. And the fact that even when you kill something for experience, none of the traits you used against them get any actual benefit either, means that you'll be spending a whole LOT of time doing a lot of nothing in order to have a defense worth anything. Which is made only more painful when it's supposed to be passive traits that you're trying to build up. Passing this, the main town is rather unremarkable for what you are able to do. And say you want to build up your thievery skills so that you could actually start getting more loot discretely. the second you pick up anything, even when you've double-checked that there is nobody in the building you're trying to loot, every officer throughout the game world treats you like a dirty little thief that must be vanquished. And by god, did they make those guys omniscient or something. You'd swear if you farted in your seat, the guards would already be simultaneously swiping their hands across their faces in disgust. Really, about the only good thing that I have been able to find in the game, was the overly limited voice acting that Patrick Stewart has in the beginning, and that seems to be the only unarguably good thing even people that loved the game I know of have been able to say.

That's a pretty intelligent discussion regarding the flaws of Oblivion.

The thread mentioned by Robbie indeed says it all. Oblivion was IMHO a mediocre RPG with great graphics for it's time. I thoroughly enjoyed playing it for 150+ hours, but compared to fallout, morrowind, dragon age, mass effect, etc. it is just not on par.

Most people hate Oblivion purely because it has a large fan base. Same thing goes for Halo and various other popular media...i.e. Through The Fire And Flames by Dragonforce
