My rpg background pre-Oblivion: Chrono Trigger, Pokemon, KOTOR, KOTOR2, Golden Sun, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, Eternal Sonata, Fallout 3, Lost Odyssey.
Reasons I dislike Oblivion:
- The main story seemed like it didn't matter in the overall scope of the game.
- Alot of things I consider to be norms in RPGs aren't there. I remember closing my first Oblivion gate and the entire thing was 100% dungeon with no story at all. In most RPGs a dungeon that long would end with a boss fight that's got dialog and some deeper part of the story happens.
- I thought the quests were boring overall.
- The interface is crappy compared to most other RPGs i've played.
- The characters were boring.
The only things I liked was that it was open world, but that only stays cool for so long, and the guilds were done better than most other RPGs i've played do stuff like that.
Based off of the history of RPGs i've played, i've come to expect strong story telling and characters from an RPG. That's the primary thing i'm looking for from the genre. If that's weak, it takes a really great battle system and well done leveling system to make up for it. Fallout 3 and Pokemon are the only RPGs i've played that had a battle and leveling system good enough to make up for my issues with the story/characters.
