It seems like everytime I play these games, people are playing online too. The servers are always in use and just about everyone I know owns CoD and Halo.

So what's with all of the love?

What do you think about it when you hear people raving about either of these games?

i think they need to play real game not games that are easy to be good at. i would take a singleplayer RPG over COD or Halo anyday(or gears of war one :D)

what about the online experience? doesnt count? anyway, the gameplay is simple and addictive, you can level up, etc, things that everybody knows..why this love question? same thing when people ask about the hate that other people have towards it. some people like it, others dont..like in gta4, a lot of people loved it, i hated it. so what now? the world is goin to explode?! KABUM!

im tired of the argument of how these games are too easy to be good at. yes, they are pretty accesible to where the average joe gamer can pick up and play online without getting completely demolished, but it still takes time and skill to become really good at these games. what im saying is, just because average gamers can pick up and play and get a few kills online (which makes the game better and more fun imo) it doesnt mean that everyone is the same skill level. there are still people who are very good at the game and people who arent.

They are extremely tight, polished, high quality shooters with huge production values and a ton of hype, with continous support from the devolopers on the online front. Why wouldn't lots of people play them?

Yeah, they've had multiplayer since launch, the best in the buisness. Would you like me to remove your rock now?

just because you picked it up and did that well in your first game doesnt mean its the same for everyone else. theres still ALOT of people who finish with negative kill/death ratios in matches. also, neither cod4 nor WaW have ever claimed to be tactical shooters. they know theyre pretty much run and gun shooters, and they're good at it.

you dont really die in 2 shots unless you're getting shot by the m16 (god i hate that gun lol).and you said you went 24-3 in your game so obviously you didnt have a problem with dying too much, so i dont really understand what your problem is with the game.

They're easy to pick up, hard to master.

I don't have the drive to play hard to pick up, impossible to master games like I used to. With SOCOM 2 and Counter Strike, I was in 8th grade going into high school which I didn't take serious so I would just come home, or not even go to school and play them all day. I'm sure other people feel the same.

I think why people play it so much, or at least for me. My friends did, so i got the games, and then played it, and started to love it, and it just keeps going, lately, I have no been playing Halo at all, and playing CoD4, but still.

..and just what are you competing against in single player RPGs?

The only way to get better is to play other human players. Not poorly scripted or poorly dynamic AI.

Someone sucks at multiplayer and it's pretty obvious.

I actually prefer Halo's single player to its multiplayer. Good story and the campaigns are entertaining to play through. I just think its multiplayer is a little too 'old school' arcade-style for me. Not that there's anything wrong with that, its just not my thing. I like less of the jumping around, no-iron sight stuff, I guess.

And Call of Duty's multiplayer is simply one of the best ever, if not THE best. Its got a rewarding leveling-up system and the gameplay itself is just super-slick and satisfying.

Both are top-notch franchises and both fully deserve the hype and praise.

Easy to pick up an play games. You don't need to be great at the games to enjoy them and they have fun multiplayer. Though it takes work to master them (Halo especially).

While Singleplayer RPG's have their place, sometimes you just want to play with your friends. For me COD4 is one of the best multiplayer games EVER. You get into matches fast, and team up with your friends, and just have fun. Trust me, if Mass Effect 2 allows for me and two friends (or one) to travel around a galaxy together, I'll be spending a TON of time with it. The problem is, RPG's tend to not offer that multiplayer, friend interaction that games like COD4 can right now.

It's competitive, people like competitive games, and if you think it's easy to be good at, please play a good team on either game. And you'll always wonder what your doing wrong =]

EDIT: If you guys think that the game sucks, the multiplayer sucks, or whichever your complaining about your wrong. It's just not a game you like, they wouldn't have sold millions of copies if it wasn't good. Just like WoW, people say the game sucks, I say I don't like the game, but it still has 11 million subscribers when it's what? 4 or 5 years old? That game doesn't suck, it just doesn't fit some people choice of game.

HOnestly I never played many fps type games before.. but that was mostly because I get so incredibly motion sick that unless I tookd prescription meds I couldn't handle them. So I figured they weren't worth taking meds for. Well I got an xbox and then halo3 and tried it and found I could actually handle them on a wide screen tv. And I found I liked them so much I decided its worth taking those meds for the pc ones I have like tf2 haha

I don't know what it is about it.. something can feelexhilaratingthough when you have a huge fire fight and are the only one left standing! It's also fun watching your friends get blown across your screen.. that gives me many lols.. especially when its because of one of my noob mistakes.. hey I'm still learning :P

I wouldn't really compare the two, other than they are both shooters. Shooters tend to be really popular in multiplayer and naturally they tend to have a lot of people playing them. I think there is a GS article on the front page now saying that COD WaW has sold 11 million units worldwide multiplatform, and Modern Warfare 2 will no doubt continue this trend and break even those sales figures.

This is exactly the question I ask for the GoW series...I just don't see whats so great about it, GoW 2 just sucks IMO but thats just me, everyone else likes what they want obviously, so no point in asking, others might like what you don't and vice versa.

Halo is a special case, its a game people have played since the dawn of online gaming for consoles. Personally I have not touched halo in months and can't stand the idea of playing it. As far as COD, I am sick of WAW but COD4 is still my fav game online. COD4 was so perfect in every way, I can not wait for the next one. As far as exclusive the 360, I hope Gears quicky dethrones Halo because its a way better series! [QUOTE="gatsbythepig"]

Because they are great games goes without saying. I think they are so popular because they are the beginning of a new type of sport in a sense. To be fair this started with Counter Strike, but seeing as consoles are a bit more accessible its no surprise that these games get more attention on the board. Anything that garners passion and perseverance and is setup to be at least a moderately fair competition can be considered a form of sport. I think these types of games that are at the forefront of popular online competitive gamming are the beginning of a new type of sport. Hence their perpetual popularity.

Personally, Halo is okay. Never played COD. I've always found Halo to be just plain TOO straightforward and basic. It's just throwing and shooting... and jumping. Damn that jumping... I too would take a good sandbox game or RPG over those two. But I am in love with First and Third-Person Shooters, despite my first statement. I love me some Condemned 2 and Gears...

I used to play Halo 3's multiplayer back when it came out. Haven't played it recently though. I don't own any COD game but COD4 seems interesting. I'm getting MW2 when it comes out.

CoD4 is simply amazing. Everything is so balanced, good graphics, good controls. It's just simply a good game. It's like saying "How come nobody plays vampire rain?" :roll:RobboElRobbo
That game is not even close to being "balanced." Juggernaut Noobs, Frag-Fest, and even more M16 noobs with Sropping Power.

Halo 3 is just fun, but it will dry out fast unless you have friends willing to play, as for CoD4, it is always fun for me, whether I am alone or not (except if people are spamming nades, or camping), Team Tactical is really fun to play if you have 2 other friends with you
