I believe its cause USA goes to war in almost every opportunity.XenoLair
Unfortunately thats true. If there is any conflict in the world we get involved in some shape or form. This coupled with the fact that the developers and the target audience are probably American are what lead to so many FPSes centering around the U.S. Though I have no idea why the Russians are cast as the antagonists so often.

You guys ever notice how 99% of big modern/ ww2 shooters have you play in the U.S millitary everytime? Why not use a different country in the world for once.

Im not whining because i live in Canada and hate the states, i have nothing wrong with our neighbors to the south but seriously im getting sick of playing the same marines/ rangers every single time.

When MOH was first revealed i heard that it was going to be set in Afghanistan, i hoped for a little while that we would be a part of a different country. Britain, Canada, Australia, France etc. Those countries were at one point or still are in Afghanistan. Also, im assuming when i post this im going to get some 15 year old kid saying LOLOL CANADAS MILLITARY IS SUCKS HAHA so if your one of these people then dont even bother posting, you just make your self look like an idiot.

Oh well, hopefully MOH will be kick ass :)

there are plenty of games that feature and infact star the armies of other nations,,,but mind you I do get what you mean how it tends to be america saving the world, even in sci-fi, take halo for instance your in the 26th century in an army thats meant to be consisted of the united NATIONS (emphasis on the plural) space command and yet just about every soldier seems to sound very american ... it does get a bit annoying for those of us of other naitons sometimes but over all it doesnt mean to much in the long run

dont u remember teh banter between the troops throughout the halo series, there was always an aussie grunt (albeit fake aussie accent, but ti wasnt bad!). he was always teh funniest guy! what a refreshing voice to hear in the game (i am australian btw, found it very funny)

btw the australian airforce has planes taht can counter the best US planes in combat. our most advanced planes can detect and destroy yours before the US planes even know whats going on! plus we live on an island, and islands are cool.

American developers, American military. Its not hard to figure out. Anyway, even if they used the French....military? j/k it would be the same game, just with a different coat of paint. Would that really make a difference?

Though I have no idea why the Russians are cast as the antagonists so often. chaosflare44

lol does the term Cold War mean anything to you? But in reality the Russians have been an ally more often than enemy. That is solely because of the massive number of WWII games. Germans have the all time record for antagonist roles and I doubt that will ever be broken.

This is like asking why a large portion of protagonists in video games are white males. Because thats what the developers are, and thats what the largest target audience is.

kaze347
Same goes for Hollywood movies. Whether people like it or not, it's true. And it has been for the longest time.. Why get so worked up about it? Personally, I couldn't stand playing through a game with a protagonist and characters that have rough accents. Being a mixed heritage myself, consisting of white, indian, and asian (yes I'm a mut), I like the American themed games. Every now and then, we get a game like Metro 2033 with Russian characters and it's refreshing.. but most games will have western-based, American characters. Not just American Military.

to the TC, i will talk in general here, i'm not american, but honestly, if your country is the most powerfull country in the world, you will do the same thing, plus it's more suitable in the american way, look at alan wake from remedy, they are from finland and they used an american theme and story, look at mafia 2 developers, they are from 2K Czech, so on, they are developing an american story, i'm not saying that it won't work if it's not american, but it's more popular. plus americans love to brag

No not really I'm sort of sick of it. I want to see more games in which I am playing as a Russian or German but that's just me I suppose. Although that was a very immature generalization but I am assuming that you have never actually met decent Americans so I forgive you.

Most of the developers for war games are AMERICAN. That's why the games tend to be from an American prespective. If you have a problem with it, then start your own company in your native land from your native perspective.

Jaysonguy

The American military is the strongest and most advanced in the world, what's not to make anyone on the planet want to use them for a game?

I really dont know how to respond to this without getting very angry.

I dont know ofa single modern conflict the Americans have won the only thing the American forces are good for is getting there allies killed with poor stratagy and there gun ho attitude. They have nothing but a huge string of military blunders. They may be the largest force but seriously they are no way number one when it comes to competance. For years its other countries special forces that have been trying to train the Americans and not the other way round, and the Americans try to take alot of the credit throught the power of Hollywood. Maybe the should but a friendly fire button on the controller next time.

Yeah i have a group of Americans friends that are some of the nicest guys i know, too bad only the ***** post on internet forums :p

IMO- For the WW2 argument every country on the Allies was important, every country played a different role for the war and with one of these countries missing, not just America, but any major country on the allies absent from the war could of resulted in a different ending.

And for the D Day argument, yeah the States had a huge victory on Omaha, but dont forget, Australia, Canada and Britain were also there hitting the beaches.

And i also agree with who ever said they're tired of seeing the Russians being the bad guys over and over again. I have seen them try to take over the world like 27 times now.

How about a game where the U.S invades Canada or Britain or.... Iceland? and you played a resistance fighter? that would spark some debate in the real world yeah but it would be a new refreshing view of war games.

Special Ops Creed…

S pecial Ops means I recognize the fact that I have volunteered and have been chosen as one of the elite. Being chosen as a Special Ops operative I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor and high "Espirit De Corps" of my Regiment. Gallantly will I show the world that I'm a specially selected and well trained soldier. My courtesy to superior officers, neatness of dress and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow. Above all I will reach my objective honorably, I WILL NEVER CHEAT to obtain a victory!

P ride in my Unit, Team and Myself will always lead my actions. Never shall I fail my comrade's. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be. One Hundred-percent and then some. I will be their eyes and ears, working as one TEAM entity.

E ver vigilant of the dangers to the team should they be flanked I will provide back-up to any & all team members and constantly watch their backs when they are engaged in fire. I will be the eyes in the back of their head as they will be the eyes in the back of mine.

C ourageously and Energetically will I meet the enemies of my country. Acting without mercy I shall defeat them on the field of battle for I am better trained and will fight with all my might.

I will always maintain that I am a member of a team and never an individual. I will train endlessly… mastering each weapon available to me, for these are the tools of my trade. I will choose my weapons carefully as to compliment my team and enhance the effectiveness of it to complete our objective.

A cknowledging the fact that as a Special Ops elite soldier I will arrive at the cutting edge of battle by land, sea, or air, moving further, faster and fight harder than any other soldier. I accept that my country and team members expect me to be in place and do my part to complete the mission successfully. I will never leave my team in jeopardy while maintaining my own safety over the safety of the team.

L oyalty to my superiors, chain of command, and allegiance to the force is engrained in my soul! I will never overstep my authority. My superiors lead and I will follow! I will never question their authority and will never degrade them when speaking to others. If I find I can not follow their orders or respect them I will immediately resign my status in writing as a Special Operations operative.

O ne force, One team, One person… Unbeatable. I will perform the impossible. Be where others cannot be, see where others can not see, act when others can not act. My team is my lifeblood and I am theirs. If I fail, my team is jeopardized… Therefore I will NOT fail!

P recision accuracy is foremost… I will place each shot on target whether it be as a sniper or lead infantry. I will choose every shot carefully identifying each target as the enemy before releasing my lethal payload. I will never fire recklessly as to jeopardize any of my team to "Friendly Fire".

S urrender is not a Special Ops word. I will Never fail to respond to the call of a comrade needing my assistance knowing they will always respond to mine. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embarrass my country, the prestigious name of Special Ops, or my Squad.

This is why my friend. We are the Best of the best. The Mightiest of mighty. Is this cocky? Yes, but the reputation is well deserved. To bluntly put it, we've earned it.

In case it hasn't been posted already, the Canadian military is represented in COD 3. You get to play a few missions as a Canadian soldier but I am sorry I can't remember the name. It is a rare moment in videogames and I hope it will not be the last. It doesn't make a huge difference what country your soldier is from but it still would be nice to get a different take on military tactics, weapons, and combat gear and have different scenarios to play out from another point of view.

I don't think it really makes a difference I mean common dude I have never heard of anybody complaining about it until you brought it up. If you have a problem with what country you are fighting as or against in a game, then dont play the game your not being forced to its just out there to have fun. Besides you don't see any other people complaining about it do you?

Don't the COD games let you play as other countries/agencies? And besides it's not a bit deal.. especially if it's developed by an American company. It's like when you see all the anime based games starring Japanese characters. Ever wonder why?

MEOWWW123
Because to these dev studios, Canada and the rest of the world doesn't exist. :P Well, how else do you explain how many Japanese game studios have such games that would do great here, but refuse to ever release a version of it here? And we're even talking about games that don't really require translation.

Im not whining because i live in Canada and hate the states, i have nothing wrong with our neighbors to the south but seriously im getting sick of playing the same marines/ rangers every single time.

MEOWWW123
You and me both... and I am in the states. :P Seriously, I would happily forgive the ridiculously long development time for 3DRealms if they could just get DNF out the door right now. Or for Croteam to get back to its roots and bring us Serious Sam 3. We need to have some nonsense shooters again.

In most cases it just makes the most sense. In a lot of the situations they are trying to portray it makes the most sense that the U.S. military would be involved in some way. And, as a lot of others have mentioned, the U.S. military is the most advanced and powerful in the world. That makes it the most attractive option for players. Most of the devs creating these games are American and, perhaps most importantly, the majority of these dev's targeted audience, whether the devs are American or not, are in fact American. It just adds up, for better or for worst.

America may have the most advanced army but us British have the best Navy and the first and best special forces groups ever theSAS ;). I liked COD 4 for their SAS bits and I thought they were the best parts of a military shooter ever! I mean D Day on MOH Frontline was good but SAS missions COD4 amazing! The thing I want to know though is why are all British characters portrayed in games Cockneys or Glaswegians? I live in the North of England and wheres the Scousers, Geordies and Mancs in war games? Hower Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Dice etc pull your fingers out and put a few of us in haha. Conisdering most of our Army is made up of people from the North of England you'd think they'd be represented eh?

[QUOTE="kungfool69"]

[QUOTE="penpusher"] there are plenty of games that feature and infact star the armies of other nations,,,but mind you I do get what you mean how it tends to be america saving the world, even in sci-fi, take halo for instance your in the 26th century in an army thats meant to be consisted of the united NATIONS (emphasis on the plural) space command and yet just about every soldier seems to sound very american ... it does get a bit annoying for those of us of other naitons sometimes but over all it doesnt mean to much in the long runTrinitarian

dont u remember teh banter between the troops throughout the halo series, there was always an aussie grunt (albeit fake aussie accent, but ti wasnt bad!). he was always teh funniest guy! what a refreshing voice to hear in the game (i am australian btw, found it very funny)

btw the australian airforce has planes taht can counter the best US planes in combat. our most advanced planes can detect and destroy yours before the US planes even know whats going on! plus we live on an island, and islands are cool.

hey i guess you never heard that what we wanted you to think stupied lol JK

OH THE IRONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE NO!!!!!!!!!!!!

[QUOTE="penpusher"][QUOTE="Trinitarian"] Russians would have not been able to defeat Germany without the Americans. However, I will acknowledge that America isn't the "savior" of europe out of good will. The Ameican people didn't want to or would support going to war with Germany. In fact, even after Japan attacted us during peral harbor, most historians aggree that the American people would have been fine with the fact that our war was in the Pacific with Japan and Europe;s war was with Germany if is wasn't for Japan taken sides with Germany, since they thought Germany was going to be vicotories, and consquently, Germany declaring war on the U.S. Nevertheless, America turned the tides of war with the invasion and air superiority. Otherwise Germany would have prevailed at best, or at worst, would have been a very long stalemate which most historian aggree with the former. Trinitarian
how do you figure russia wouldnt have defeated germany? by the time of d-day the russians had already blunted the german advance, got their act together and were rapidly grinding down the german forces ... they were knackered on that front, true they could have regrouped if it werent for a combination of hitlers incompotency and D-day itself but russia was doing fine... Though to avoid this turning into a historical debate on a gaming forum,,,the russian front would actually make a very good game :D makes ya wonder why relic never added it to their company of heroes games

Well for one Americas air superority, we bomb so many factories, air ports, infastuctor, cities, that it weakened Germany's resolve agaisnt Russia. Second, American destroyer's basically saved Britains economy because Germany's U-boats were sinking a large amount of imported supplies to sustane the econmoy. Without us taking out those U-boats Britian would have feel. And maybe you have some other's historians perspective on D-day but all agree that without it Germany would not have fallen. But who am i to say i wasn't there i'm just an American boy who Grandfather was on the Anizo beach invasion, just as important but did not recieve any as much meida attention as Normandy, so i wasn't there lol. However, I do know that Hilter was expecting an american beach invasion and he didn't know when or where. Thats when we had all that spy work going on and making Hilter think Pattons armies was coming from the East and other spys fed hilter false intel that a beach invasion was going to occur farther east. So hitler was moving the majority of his force in response to the americans. Now, do you really think that Russia alone could have taken out Germany without any of our contributions of Air, Navl, intel, and ground forces. Wasn't D-day the largest land based invasion in the history of the world? Would we wasted our time with that if we knew Russia would have just wiped them out. Its hard to believe, but hey, some Americans think the our own government planned 9/11 so i guess anything goes right lol.

PLEASE! American destroyers didnt save Britains economy, Amercia waited till Britain and the rest of Europe were ineconomic dire straights before joining the war so they could force Britain and Europes hands when it came to new trade agreements for after the war. Like every conflict the USA gets involved in, it was about greed. The only reason American destoryers were out protecting supplies to Britain was because you were making to much money selling us munitons. America is the reason Britain never really recovered after two world wars and you expect us to be gratefull.

I don't really see the point of this topic. I mean if we take the most reacent cod games you play as a mix of nations. Three of the largest are represented with russia, us and british. I mean, playing as Germany in a WWI/WWII title probably wouldn't go over well. I just think the 3 used in the cod series are just a tad more known for thier military than most...not that there aren't tons of militaries around the world, they just don't get the coverage. When making a game they want to appeal to thier biggest audience, by appeal i mean give them something to relate to. Just my opinion, I really don't care which military i'm using to whoop ass :)
