Will there be black bars visible when connecting to a 4:3 ratio monitor ?

I'm thinking of buying an Xbox 360. Since I don't have a HDTV, I'm thinking of connecting it to my PC monitor.

The monitor that I have is a Dell 19" with a max resolution of 1280*1024.

If I connect my Xbox 360 to it (via VGA) will the image fill up the screen (in games) or will there be black bars ?

Thanks

On the System Balde for video setting you can select - standard for your viewing mode and select 1280x1024 for the resolution. In this case there will not be any black bars thought the image will be "slightly" stretched to make it that way due to the aspect ratio difference. I used to play at 1280x1024 and the stretching is minimal - you will get a good image and no black bars by doing it this way.

What about on an SDTV? Can I select to play on full screen with added but slight stretching also?

Yes you can play on an SDTV but it will be a lower resolution - you will not have black bars if you select the standard setting.

The stretching is noticeable - but not much. It's really not that bad and to me it was preferable to black bars when I was playing on a "square" screen.

Both in SDTV mode and at 1280x1024 - I prefer to play with the standard setting and no black bars. You can always switch to widescreen if you think it's stretched too much - then you will have the black bars but maintain the 16x9 aspect ratio. Like I said I didn't think the stretching was very bad myself.

It depends on the game, some games have black bars, some don't, oh and by the way monitors are 5:4 not 4:3 :P (widecreen ones are 16:10 not 16:9). That is why there is a slight verticle stretching on the picture. I use my monitor and i find it o most the time but racing games look a little odd slightly stretched. But it's better than paying for a HDTV.

So if I set the Xbox 360 (on the dashboard settings) at "Normal (non-widescreen" and the resolution at 1280*1024, the image should fill up the entire screen without any black bars in games ? As for the stretching issue, could someone please post some screenshots ?

Thanks
