So now that I finally got my X1 I want to add an external HDD

  • my PS2 slim has an external 2.5" USB powered HDD, it powers up when I access it and turns off when I turn the console off ( not actually off but on standby )
  • my Wii has an external 2.5" USB powered HDD, it powers up when I turn on the console and turns off when I turn the console off ( standby )

  • my X360 also has an external 2.5" USB powered HDD but I have to plug it in when I want to access the content and plug it out to turn it off otherwise it will remain ON all the time since the console will continue to supply power to it even when it´s turned off ( standby )

So the question has to do with the power supply, if I choose an external 2.5" HDD will the console continue to supply power to it keeping it turned on all the time like the X360 does or it will turn off when the console goes off into standby mode ? It doesn´t really bother me having to plug and unplug the HDD like I have to do with the X360 but I´d rather have a 2.5" USB powered HDD than a 3.5" with it´s own power supply, why ? because for me right now it´s a matter of space, I´m still trying to figure out where and how I´m going to install the X1, the size of the console represents me some trouble, with those other HDDs I have no problem placing them since they are in small cases you can put anywhere but 3.5" with it´s own case and power supply is another history.

Good question. Not sure with a console. With a powered hub, the connection remains active, but with a passive hub the electrical connection is lost. Does the One act powered hub? Budget wise I have had to wait until next month to get a external drive. Personally it will be going into a caddy for maximum integrity.

@transk53: "Does the One act powered hub?" ----> I have no idea, the USB ports in the X360 slim ( all the 5 of them ) supply power even when the console is in standby mode, that´s how I power the laptop cooling base that´s under the console, I keep it running until the console cools down, those same USBs provide power to the external HDD.

@raugutcon:

There's an option for powering off external devices in the settings. It should be in the power settings, but I don't remember exactly where I saw it.
