Is it just me or does anyone else feel like the 50$ we throw at Microsoft for Xbox Live Gold for one year is a bit skimmpy compared to what the PS3 offers FOR free?

Personally, I'm a little upset that Playstation 3 gets completely free online service and also they are getting PS Home which a much more elaborate, funner, better way to make use of a Marketplace type application. They offer a completely free virtual world which is almost like a free version of the Sims + they incorporate their Marketplace into it in a very unique way.

The 360's online gameplay service itself is very reliable (except gears of war) which I enjoy, but what else do we get with it? not much at all. Doesn't anyone else feel MS should step it up and try to develop a little bit more interesting of an interface...prefebly one that isn't so slow, and maby add a free virtual world for us :3? I pay 50$/year to play this stuff online, yet PSN gets a better deal for nothing. What's up with that? Now I love my 360, right now it obviously is a much better console than PS3...things like this attract me more to the PS3. =\

playstation home is cool, bud do you really want to wander around some virtual world to find games to play, or have a premium, reliable service to just get demos and videos, and paly games with great connections and make some friends along the way

Standardised voice chat in ALL games not just some like with PSN. More support for XBL both remakes and original IPs. Voice chat on an external system ie. voice chat in any game any time not just in multiplayer...erm play. Good dashboard and updates for free which implement great new features and tweak the existing dashboard, so they're always adding new things. MSN, you may not need it but not everyone has a pc in there room/ gaming room so its a nice feature for those that don't. There are more i could highlight but those are the main things we get which are of superior quality to the PSN, and rightly so for our 40 quid a year.

My point on my other topic: force M$ to come up with better deal with xbox live when PS3 seems attractive enough.

I would suggest clearing your cache or something. My 360 downloads 4x faster than my PS3 ever has consistently. PS3 on-line gameplay is very smooth, though. The blades are very convenient and easy to use. I think it will make alot more sense why they are the way they are when the PS3 has as much or even half the content the XBL does. This should be in System Wars as well.

Sorry, dude. I used to think otherwise, but I think the service is every bit worth it for the price.

I love the features and the user-friendlyness.

I've browsed a bit on my buddy's PS3 network and I was not impressed.

Don't get me wrong, I wish Xbox Live was free, but I actually think it is worth it. The best online experience in console gaming.

Plus access toxbox live arcade, the abilityto update your console for free, web cams andvoice chat rooms. What morecould you want? And, why would you want to spend your time running around a virtual console? You buy a console for the games, not the virtual world.

Nah, I think it's more of a friendly debate over the marketing practices of M$.

PSN isn't something i'd enjoy...it's just a pretty GUI and would mostly appeal to those who enjoy MMO's...

Plus, we can avoid, mute, basically monitor our accounts as we please....universally.

You guys complaining about Xbox Live's annual $50 price tag? How about those turds in WoW paying $15 a MONTH to play? Also, do you think in any way shape or form you can see what your FRIENDS on PSN are doing so you can join their games right on the fly? Yea, let's see it. And even though I don't listen to music while playing Xbox 360 games, on the PS3, when the game starts the music stops. Not to mention the fact PS3 will always be more expensive than Xbox 360. And don't start getting into any PS3-PSP connectivity - Nintendo DS is PWNING PSP in every way, and even though PSP is quite a capable handheld its just another one in the long line of failed GameBoy rivals. Lastly, what games are there gonna be on PSN any time soon? There's Warhawk, UT3 (soon), GT5 and Resistance, yes, but Xbox Live and Xbox 360 games have more to offer.

Your paying less then what a game would cost to be able to play online, or download free content/demos for a year. Sounds more then fair to me.

Services like LIVE and PSN cost companies millions of dollars to operate and maintain. Think of how many content servers, switches, routers and man hours that are necessary to maintain a service that is available 24/7 and you'll see why Microsoft charges $50 a year. To be honest, i'm suprised that Sony is biting the bullet and not charging for their PSN but that's their business model for now. I honestly don't mind paying $50 a year for a unified gaming platform that offers a lot of worthwhile content. Now, on the other side of the fence, Playstation's PSN is not as fruitful as LIVE but it is no slouch either. A totally free online gaming community with demos, trailers, some voice chat functionality, and soon to be Home can't be beat. As for the thread starter, you, as the consumer, have the choice whether or not to pay for a service. If LIVE does not live up to your expectations, then don't give them your money. Plain and simple. I enjoy LIVE and everything it has to offer and at a cost of roughly four dollars a month (or 1 dollar a week; or .14 a day), it is well worth the money.

I have both a PS3 and a 360.

I am not biased to or against either system, both have great positives.

While for free, PSN does offer a substantial amount of services, yet still seems stripped down when compared to the 360.

The positives that the LIVE service has that PSN does not are as follows

  • Voice Chat supportedin ALL games
  • Voice Chat while in different games
  • Easier to maneuver store
  • More/Betteritems in the store
  • Joinability of friends is much easier
  • Setup up friends list and messages is set up better
  • Viewing recent players is easier
  • Ability to access friends list and messages and.. everything, by pushing the guide button during anything
  • Achievement system or even if you dont like achievements, you can view games owned by 360 members

There are probably a few more perks that I cant think of off hand, but thats about it. Like I said, yes I do enjoy the PSN and the fact that is free is great, but I gladly shell out $50 a year for the major positives that the LIVE service has
