I got a brand new xbox 360 slim about 3 months ago to replace my old xbox 360. Somehow the 360 slim keeps overheating. The thing I'm worried about is the space. I lay my xbox horizontally where the vents go up. I have about 3 inches of space in height from the vent to the table. Is that enough? I've checked forums and yahoo answers and people say 3 inches is enough, but somehow my xbox still gets hot. I've also install my games into the hard drive to let the xbox and games run smoother, but it barely helps. I have my xbox run up to 14 hours straight sometimes and when I touch it I'm like "Oh d@mn that hot". The weather I live in is cool and rainy so that shouldn't be a problem. Dust is not a problem either. Is the xbox a defect? Can't afford to get a new xbox slim though. Not sure if my warranty pass. What can I do?

No you need an open space like six inches at least on all sides. MS has a one year warranty and in euopre it's even longer. Don't run it that long, turn it off to cool for an hour for every 8 hours you game. If I ran my old PS3 for that long it would break.

If your 360 over heats it will automatically shut off. So, it's not over heating. Yes, it does feel hot there since that is the main heat source of the console. I worried about that at first when I got my "slim" in 2010. It still works great. Don't stress and enjoy your games.

when you stand it vertical its blocking a main air vent, plus its summer.  put it horizontal with space around it and turn on the air conditioner you cheap ass.

Dude he said it isn't hot where he is. Ease up.

Anyways, TC, when I first got my 360 slim I was also concerned about the heat but it is quite normal.

I am so sick of these posts that keep saying if you stand your xbox vertically you are blocking a main vent. This is complete HORSESH!t. I have had my 360 slim vertical for years now and it runs fine and has never overheated. If you look closely at the bottom of the 360 it has rubber feet to elevate about an 16th of an inch off a surface it is placed on. Contrary to popular belief this IS enough space for air to be drawn into the unit with, as far as a space consumer... air is pretty thin. Just give your unit as much room as possible. I stand mine about an inch to the right of my TV so that the big vent faces right away from my TV. Every stinkin Xbox I have ever seen on display is vertical and enclosed in a case for crying out loud.

My slim 360 is set up in a similar way.  3-4 inches of space on top and the sides are maybe 5-6 from the edge.  I use mine with games and media center to stream TV, its our only source for TV so we can run it up to 14 hours straight also.  I've never had any issue with any of the slims over heating.  I've got 3 Slims in the house and none have ever had an issue.  Its not closed up in a cabinet right?
