absolutely you have so much fun and meet so many friends it is like a park in your tv and yes, some people will be @$$ holes to you but ya don't see it much.
Gold membership is sooo worth it, its worth it even more now. on E3 microsoft said that a lot of good things are coming to xbox live. and for Gold members only. Free subscription to Last.fm. so that you can listen to the millions of songs that last.fm has. so its pretty awesome

All games have a mute button. I always here people whine about the kids and cursing on live. But all you have to do is hit that mute button thats what they made ir for.

It's worth it but it also depends how much you plan to use it because like most subscriptions it is still being depleted even though you may not be playing your Xbox.
Now a days online-multiplayer makes up half of the game. For instance, Modern Warfare 2. Sure the campaign is good and will last you a few hours, but if you really want your $60 worth investing in the multiplayer can give you hundreds of hours more per game.
Xbox live is probably one of the best Online service out right now and you need it, its worth it man. Just makes sure you get the 13 month one since it will last you a whole year (Include 1 more month) that it won't bored you to tears (Like PSN, which its great BTW). IMO, get Xbox live.
